968.0. "Birmingham-6 Hill to Speak 10/27" by WREATH::DROTTER () Wed Oct 23 1991 17:15

                     Ex-inmate Slams British Justice.
1 of Birmingham 6 Visits Boston

                          Boston Globe (10/23/91)
                       by Gloria Negri (Globe staff)

Patrick Hill, one of the Birmingham Six sentenced in the Irish
Republican Army bombing of two English pubs in 1974 has been a
free man for seven months now, but he has dedicated the first
year of his freedom to telling the world about "the loads of
innocent people" he left behind in British prisons.

In Boston yesterday for speaking engagements and a meeting
with Mayor Flynn, Hill, 46, said that when he left jail after 16
years on March 14, he promised the "300 to 500 innocent people"
he said are still held by the British that he would tell the
world "how corrupt and rotten the British criminal justice system
is."

Hill maintains his own innocence and that of five other
defendants in the bombing of two Birmingham pubs that killed 21
persons and injured 162. The six were arrested while on their way
to Belfast for the funeral of an IRA member.

All six were set free in March after the British Court of
Appeal reversed their convictions. A royal commission has been
appointed to review the justice system and "to minimize as far as
possible the likelihood of such events happening again."

Hill said only world opinion and pressure by the United States
will "get the Brits out of Ireland" and end the strife. "It could
happen in 12 months if all the Irish American would stop just
talking and sending money to the IRA to buy bombs and, instead,
lobby for peace," he said.

Hill said that though he does not support the IRA, "I cannot
condemn them. We must ask what has been done to these people to
make them plant bombs? It is no good to complain about the
monster, but rather about the people who created it."

A slight man with graying hair and great powers of oratory,
Hill said that he grew up "in a British background" and that his
father "did 30 years in the English army." Now, he says, he lives
in the north of London in a heavily Irish neighborhood, "where
you're liable to get six months (in jail) just for having an
Irish accent. When the IRA plant bombs, the police start raiding
people's homes under the so-called Prevention of Terrorism Act."

National Speaking Tour
This is Hill's second visit to Boston...His current stay is
part of a two-month national speaking tour sponsored by the
Boston Chapter of the Irish-American Unity Conference. He will be
here until oct. 30 and is scheduled to speak before the state
Senate, at the New England School of Law, and on Sunday to appear
at a Birmingham Six Release Ceili at the American Legion Hall on
California Street in Newton.

Although he appeared tired, Hill said his speaking agenda,
packed with appearances cheduled for Minneapolis, Los Angeles,
San Francisco, New Mexico, and West Palm Beach, Fla., is a tonic
to the spirit battered during his years in prison. "At first in
prison," he said, "we were treated worse than animals."

"Irish-Americans have got to lobby Congress to pressure the
British to get out of Ireland just as Jewish Americans lobby
Congress on Israeli issues," Hill said. "But they've got to
pressure the IRA too and tell them to stop bombing and to go on
the defensive instead of the offensive.

"Discrimination and Hatred"
"I want to energize Irish-Americans as the Israelis have
energized Jewish Americans to bring their case before the public.
In my talks, I highlight the discrimination and hatred the
English criminal justice system uses toward prisoners who are
Irish, black, and of ethnic minorities.. I want people to know
how rotten and corrupt the [English criminal justice] system is,"
he said.
[Mayor] Flynn, who has long supported the Birmingham Six, told
Hill that the violence connected with the troubles in Ireland
"turned off a lot of people. The wrongful incarceration of six
innocent Irishmen by the British government is an act of
institutional which should never again be committed."...

Hill, who maintains he was convicted on the basis of dubious
forensic evidence, said he will not take part in the royal
commission inquiry next month. He said he planned to take his
case before the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.

The commission "is only a whitewash," he said. "They're asking
us to submit evidence in writing behind closed doors. I want no
part of that. I want the world to know what happened. My trial
was open to the public and press. So should the commission's
inquiry."

Hill said he and five other men "were never arrested" for the
pub bombings, but we went to the station of our ouwn free will
and volunteered to take the forensic tests. At the trial the
Police were standing on the witness stand giving evidence against
me from empty notebooks."

At the end of his American tour, Hill said, he plans to speak
before Amnesty International at the invitation of its president,
John Healy, and before the European Parliament. "It will be very
interesting when Ireland becomes part of the European Community
next year and all the borders come down," he said. "What will
happen then?"

Hill, the father of six children, said he and his wife were
divorced while he was in prison. Only after fulfilling his
promise to the other prisoners, he said, will he work on "getting
my own life togwether."

Went to see the Patrick Joe Hill last night...it was unbelievable! The
unspeakable horrors that these six had to endure at the hands of the
British police, let alone the whole British (IN)justice system.
Whatever you've heard in the press about what the Birmingham police
did to them, is only the tip of the iceberg of what the police
actually did to them. Believe me, "torture" would be too light a word.

I got to talk with him afterwards and he said he wasn't sure
what date(s) he'd be in New Mexico. He did indicate he had
given a telephone interview to a radio station in New Mexico
earlier yesterday. Sorry for the lack of info.

He is flying to Detroit, then Chicago, and I think he said he'd be in
San Francisco from the 5th to the 14th of November. SO, I guess
he'd probably be in N.M. some time after that.

As a matter of intrest, can you say what was the 'make up' of the
people who went to listen to him speak. Were they mainly Irish ex-pats
with an intrest in Irish politics or did any 'ordinary' Americans turn
up ? Were there any US politicans there ? Were there any press reports
of the contents of the speech the next day.

968.8The story is Triple X, never mind Double XWELWIT::MANNIONBy his own hand shall ye know him!Tue Jan 28 1992 09:1241
I just finished reading Chris Mullin's book "Error of Judgement." Even
though I knew right from the start that the story in it was true I
found it incredible, from the detention on the night of the Birmingham
pub bombs to the 1988 appeal. I kept thinking that these men must have
though they had died and gone to hell - in fact one of them is reported
as saying in prison "Please let me die."

The book is very well written; in fact it deserves the involuntary
praise given to it by a former Home Secretary (David Waddington) when
he refered to it as "a novel." It reads as well as that; however, the
story is too unbelievable for it to have been accepted for publication
as a novel. Anyone who hasn't read it should do so. The ISBN is
1-85371-090-3, and the publisher is Poolbeg.

The book shows quite clearly that any Irishman would have done for the
crime. I believe that even if there had been no forensic evidence
against them at the time, the six men would have still had the shit
beaten out of them till they confessed, as the police were planning
from the start to take them back to Birmingham. That's just my belief,
but there's as much evidence for it as there is for anything else to do
    with this case.

There was a recent decision I half heard on the radio - in the last few
days I believe - that the High Court has overruled a magistrates'
decision not to proceed against the police in the Maguire family case.
Can anyone who is closer to these things than I am confirm that? If so,
then I expect that that will have positive implications for the case
against Reade et al. (It's a pity no action can be taken against the
judges involved in the various hearings, who are just as guilty as the
police.) What is the current situation with the procedings against
Reade and the others, does anyone know? The last I heard he was in
    Australia.

I was amazed by a conversation I had about this with my mother on
Sunday. She said that the Birmingham Six had never claimed not to be
IRA men, and look what they were doing - going to an IRA man's funeral
when they were arrested. I told her the facts, and pointed out that
going to someone's funeral is not a crime. But I'm still not sure, I
think it might be, despite everything.

QUESTION :- Who was an advisor for the making of the movie "BLOWN

    of household goods etc.. ???

    Gordon,

I think it was actually Paul Hill of the Guilford Four, who provided
technical advice to the makers of "Blown Away".

It is sad that Paddy Joe Hill of the Birmingham Six is still being
blamed for things he didn't do.......8*)

this aspect of the movie he was consulting on?

The aspect of the movie that Paul Hill would have
been qualified to speak on, would have been the
interrogation and beatings given by the British
  forces at the prison.

I saw the movie, there is a Paul Hill in the credits, but has it been
confirmed that it is "the" Paul Hill? It's a common name, there are
2 Paul Hill in Digital at the moment.

If it was him, remember he was never accused of being the bomb maker. Because
he lived an "unlikely lifestyle" (lived in a shared room in
a hostel with nowhere to secure explosive materials) and they found forensic
evidence that linked bombings before and after Guildford, the police version
of events has him as simply a lookout.

The movie "blown away" is very good though. The outside shots are all
in Boston and they just happen to be right by all the good tourist spots!
The older Bridges has to speak with an Irish accent the whole time, he's
not very convincing though. The youger Bridges does a bit better but
he only has to do an Irish accent for brief periods. Tommy Lee Jones has
to speak with an accent for the whole movie, he was pretty convincing
most of the time but some parts sounded more BBC English than Irish!

It also offers a glimpse of Boston-Irish culture which looked pretty
authentic. Highly recommended unless you don't like violent films!

Paul Hill's father is living in a bedsit in Ayr and has slated (in
a Sunday rag) his son for his involvment in the movie. He (the father)
said that it was an embarassment to him that after all the fighting he
did to clear his sons name that he should involve himself in such a
movie. (For those who dodn't know, the movie is about an Irish bomber
who can "make bombs from bisquick")
