966.0. "The COMMITMENTS" by YUPPY::BLAKEB (Brendan Blake@hhl) Mon Oct 21 1991 17:44

     Folks...

Just seen the new film last nite called "THE COMMITMENTS" by
Alan Parker. This film is set in North Dublin and concerns a group of
budding young muscians trying to make it in the big time with their
    band.

It is one of the best film's that I have seen for a long time, it
is full of life, wit and energy even though some may find the language a
bit crude ( rated over 15 in Britain). I wont go into any detail just
in case I might spoil it for anybody that have not seen it.

I recommend this film for the Oscar of the year.

    happy viewing
    			Brendan.

Best film I've seen in an age.

However, don't know if A. Parker was trying to make a point with
the filming of some of the 'downmarket' locations.

      Anyone read the book ?

Kevin

The Commitments Vol 2 was to be released in Ireland in early June.
But the record company have said that they intend bringing forward
the release date because the local record stores are being hit with
foriegn copies of the album being imported and sold illegally. The
album will be released in early April coinciding with the release of
the video on the home market.

Last night I noticed that The Commitments was nominated for an Academy
    Award!

For film editing!!!!?? And it didn't get it.

I guess Fox waited too long to enter the film as a candidate for the
    nominations.

The Editing went to "JFK" an achievement of Editing over History

Previously the had two Music Awards for scoring, one for Original
and another for Adaptation. This year they eliminated the Adaption
which The Commitments would have taken.

"Entertainment Weekly" has a section where they review films
for family viewing. They look at instances of Sex, Violence etc.
In "The Commitments", the number of times profanity is used
	is
			166 Times

However, they say the Irish Brogue makes most of them
	undistinquishable.

Our new TV has closed-caption capability. Yesterday my 14-yr old used
this to provide subtitles while watching "The Commitments" for the
umpteenth time and finally figured out what "shite" was.

I told him the story of how I first came to learn the word as a lone
16-yr old Yank camping on Iona with a troop of Scouts from Edinburgh.
Our picturesque campsite was a sheep pasture that came right down to a
sandy cove. We would run around barefoot in the wet grass and in and
out of the icy sea. Upon hearing what was for supper one evening, one
lad used an unfamiliar term and I asked what "shite" was.

"De ye no ken wha shite is, ya dilly? Yer stanin in it fer blooody sakes!"

I just noticed this note. I have both CDs *and* the video. Back in
1969, I played the trumpet (didn't have quite so much luck as did
Joey the Lips, but... ;^) and did backup singing in just such a band
while working my way through college. Joey G and the G Men from New
Haven, CT. Many of my fondest memories are of wailing on Try a Little
    Tenderness.

To the critics of the music on The Commitments, take it easy. Their
soul covers are astoundingly good considering none of them are black
and they're not Yanks. It takes black musicians from American cities
to really show you how to do soul, but I give that band credit for
    doing it well.
