945.0. "Paddy Burke's " by NIALL::HURLEY () Fri Aug 30 1991 16:14

Only open a couple of months, but I recommend Paddy Burke's
in Boston as the best Irish Pub around.

Its owned by the Giblin brothers (Tony and Ned ) whose family
ran a Hotel in Galway. Their brother Sean is an Engineer Manager
for DEC in Galway so it makes it an official DEC hangout.

Location: 132 Portland St, Boston. Its between the Boston Garden
and the Haymarket Parking Garage. It a Triangle building
across from the Commonwealth Brewery and the Langone
Funeral home. It used to be the old 99.

Guinness: Best around, based on trying Limericks the same night.
The keg is directly under the tap. They take their
time pouring unlike the Rose where its in front of you in
	          30 seconds. Price is $3 a pint.

Description: The building is actually four floors. There's a deli
on the first; a regular bar with wide screen on the
second; an Irish bar with music on the third and a pool
table and game room on the fourth. There's also an
	             elevator. Neither is very big.

Food: You can get food sent up from the deli downstairs from
11am to 11pm. The burgers are good and cost $2.00

Music: There's a group playing Thurs to Sat nights. Brehon Law
which is composed of the Giblins (they're all over the place).
They do Irish Folk and don't do the Unicorn, Rebel songs or
	       Seven Drunken Nights.

On Sunday nights there's a session and Weds nights too.
On off nights and afternoons they play tapes of Irish
	       sports.

Parking: Off street sometimes available; late and Sundays. Otherwise
there's a couple of nearby lots. The Haymarket Garage
	         is directly opposite.

Atmosphere: Very friendly. You get the feeling you're at a family pub
back home. There's even a bartender from Cork and a band
member from Dublin to balance the Galway influence.
Its interesting to see the band take a break, pick up
the empty glasses and then work behind the bar.

	Musc:	No cover charge.

The outside painting was done by Kevin Mulligan, former
bartender at Kathleen N Houlihan's in Nashua.

The crowds are steadily growing so check it out.

There is a pub not a million miles from Galway City called Paddy
    Burkes.
It is famous for its seafood..they run a festival out there featuring
    oysters.
I'm guessing thats where they got the name.....

I was there the other night and if that was `taking their time' in pulling the
pints as was said in .0, I'd hate to see a pub where they rushed it. To be
fair though, the place was packed to the rafters.

It was strange to hear the sounds of a credible rendition of `I Useta Love Her'
floating out the windows of a building in the middle of Boston ...
