931.0. "Celtic poetry" by SYSTEM::COCKBURN (Craig Cockburn) Thu Jul 25 1991 08:02

From: Marion GUNN <MGUNN%[email protected]>

Agus beart seaniris chur i dtreo agam, thnag ar roinnt dnta
leis an bhfile Albanach Ruaraidh Mac Thmais aistrithe go Gaeilge na
hireann ag Liam Prt.
<When I was tidying a bundle of old magazines I came across some>
<poetry by the Scottish poet, Ruaraidh Mac Thmais, with translation>
<into Irish Gaelic by Liam Prt.>
         (A) RT's original, in Scottish Gaelic
         (B) LP's translation into Irish Gaelic
         (C) translation into English (mine)

(A) Smuaintean ann an Cafe an Glaschu
A iomallan Burna a bha iad,
g, bragh, is gir' air am bilean dealbhach,
pgan tais na grin' orra fhathast
         an didh buige a' mhonsoon.
cel mn nach togadh mo chluasan ceart,
's bha beagan coibhneis 'na mo chridhe riutha -
         thuig ,i cho duilich 's a tha dhan S.E.D.
         iarrtasan nan Gaidheal a thuigsinn.

(B) Smaointe i gCafe i nGlasch
          imeallaibh Burma a bh siad,
g, bre, is gire ar a mbeola dealbhacha,
pga taise na grine orthu fs
         i ndiaidh boige an mhonsin,
ceol mn nach dtgfadh mo chluasa ceart,
is bh beagn coibhnis i mo chro leo -
thuig m chomh doiligh is at s don Roinn Oideachais
         iarratas na nGael a thuiscint.

(C) Thoughts in a Cafe in Glasgow
They were from the borderlands of Burma,
young, fine, with a laugh on their shapely lips,
still upon them the damp kiss of the sun
after the softness of the monsoon,
sweet music that my ears couldn't properly catch,
and I felt a touch of affinity with them -
I understood how hard it is for the Department of Education
to understand the petitions of the Gael.
