927.0. "Eisteddfod" by COMICS::HWILLIAMS () Mon Jul 15 1991 17:50

Well folks it's nearly that time of year again! Yes it's Eisteddfod
    time!!

This is an advert for 'Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Frenhinol Cymru' or
    (Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales)

3-10 August 1991. This is the Eisteddfod to crown all eisteddfods. I
mean it's the biggie. Attendances for the week usually top 200,000
people (More if the weather's nice!), and the whole festival costs over
    2,000,000 to stage.

It has all sorts of competitions and attractions. from arts and crafts,
to drama to singing & music to poetry and a lot more. It has even got a
fringe! and also plenty of contemporary music for us young 'uns
(usually played in pubs :-) ) I've got a copy of the official
programme here and its over 400 pages thick! the one notable feature of
this eisteddfod is that there is a welsh only rule, i.e no one is
allowed to speak in English from any of the platforms. One of the local
T.V. compamies hire out radio receivers that can pick up a concurrent
english translation for those who are not versed in the language.

This year it's situated in Mold (Yr Wyddgrug) in Clwyd. quite easy to
get to from the Motorway network. If anyone's interested I can post
directions or details from the programme.

Needless to say I've booked my weeks leave!

    Huw Williams.

Well, well, so there are a few Cymro in Digital. I thought that our
little cell of 2 in Melbourne and 1 in sydney were the total extent of
     Taffia penetration into the organisation.

Thanks for the note, it almost (but not quite) made me homesick. I
competed in the Eisteddfod on a few occasions as a chorister with Cor
Meibion Pontypridd - never won, but, as Max Boyce said in his monologue
about eisteddfod music judges, "what does she know about bloody music
    anyway".

I hope you enjoyed the Eisteddfod.

    Do you actually speak Welsh?

I have yet to find a Welsh speaking DEC employee, but I'm still trying.

                                       Sian Davies.

Had a Brilliant time at the Eisteddfod. It was very well organised this
year. The whole complex (including caravan fields etc.) covered more
than 80 acres. On Thursday (when the druids chair the winning bard)
    more than 30,000 people attended.

For anyone inetrested here are the venues for the next National
    Eisteddfods:
    			92	Aberystwyth
    			93	Llanelwedd (Builth Wells)
    			94	Castell Nedd	(Neath)
    			95	Bae Colwyn	(Colwyn Bay)
They're always held on the first full week in August.

    Hwyl, Huw.

There are discounts for seniors and children, and a festival pass costs $30.

By the way, can one of the Welsh speakers provide the correct pronounciation
of "Eisteddfod"? I've been told that it rhymes with the local
pronounciation of "New Bedford", but I've also heard variants on the 2nd
syllable.
