STATEMENT FROM DIGITAL CORPORATION
----------------------------------
14 MAY 1991
-----------
Digital Equipment Corporation announced today that it intends
to consolidate all of its hardware manufacturing operations at
its 375,000 sq. ft. facility in Ballybrit, Galway.
In an announcement to its employees Digital said that work at
its manufacturing plant in Clonmel would be transferred to
Ballybrit over time. The Corporation will maintain limited
manufacturing operations in Clonmel employing between 100-120
people for an extended period of time in order that every effort
can be made to find a new owner for the plant. In this context
the Corporation has agreed to work closely with the IDA to find
an alternative owner.
Some elements of the Clonmel manufacturing operation will
transfer to Ballybrit over the coming months. A detailed
analysis as to which operations and the number of jobs
transferring to Galway has still to be completed, but it is
estimated that it could be approximately 150 jobs.
The Corporation expects that not all employees will wish to
transfer to Galway or remain in the limited Clonmel operation.
The Corporation will provide advice and assistance through
out-placement services for any employee wishing to seek
alternative employment outside the company. It is also
expected that a number of employees will opt for a severance
package similar to that provided earlier this year.
Digital's decision to restructure its operations has been taken
as part of the Corporation's review of its manufacturing
capacity worldwide, which has resulted in capacity reductions
in both the USA and elsewhere in Europe. This review has been
made in the light of the tremendous and rapid change within the
computer industry coupled with the need for increased efficiency
within manufacturing processes across the Corporation.
Digital's extensive sales and service organisation in Ireland
will not be affected by this decision on its manufacturing
operations.
At present Digital employs 295 people in Clonmel. In total the
Corporation employs approximately 1850 people in Ireland.
