896.0. "CAR Laws!" by KBOMFG::KEYES () Thu Apr 25 1991 05:54

    Hello folks,

    Questions on Irish driving Laws.

Whats the story..at the moment..on Provisional licences..How long can
you hold one for and is there any limitations.

Also if you import a car from the continent...How long can you have it
before you HAVE to re-register it...

    ....Go raibh maith agat,

    Mick

Provisional Licences are valid for 2 years. When applying for you
third, you must show proof that you have applied for your test i.e. an
acknowledgement from the Dept. of the Environment.

Licences are now the same as in Europe, so you will need two passport
photographs. You can also get your license solely in Irish if you wish.
You should note that (in Galway at least) licences are not handed out
over the counter -- they are posted out to you about four weeks after
    you hand in the form!

As for importing cars...if you have proof that you are coming home for
good, you are not liable for import duty. You must keep the car for at
least one year, before selling it on. As for when you must re-register,
the law states that you should do it immediately. In practice, you can
probably get away with it until your Tax is out of date. The cops will
    start to get suspicious then.

If you are bringing in a left-hand drive, it might not be worth your
while. You're not going to get a good resale price for it, - you may be
as well off getting something here. Cathal Copas had a Renault 12 - you
might see if he still has it :-)

Well now, I'm amazed that Ireland still drives on the left side.
I know they do in Britain, but they have an excuse that involves
    intellectual capacity.

I've always wondered how one shifts with the left hand. Or how
they can build a steering column coming out of the glove compartment.

Americans MUST be involved in alot of accidents when they visit.

Gads, I feel the hives arisin' already.

As for buying a car off Mr Copas....I'd be safer on a bike -) -).I've
had an "experience" with him driving -) -) -) -)!

Leaprechauns were used-car salesmen before cars were invented.

    Mick,
You must be able to show proof that its your car (Bill of Sale)
that you have owned it for at least six months before the date you
are transiting it through an Irish Point of Entry (Port), this will
also be on the Bill of Sale or registration documents.
You must also be able to demonstrate proof that you are transferring
your domicile back to Ireland in a permanent move. You can do this
once only in your lifetime (avoid the punitive excise duties etc.) so
don't do this for an old clapped out jiggler.

Get yourself a right-hand drive car if you can at all. If you need
any further info. gimme a mail, I do have continental sources.

Left hand drive car owners attract a higher insurance premium here.

a bike. Hah!! And regarding the experience......was it good for you
    too?!! :^)

But on a more serious note.....you're not really thinking of importing
that mobile ashtray into Ireland? Whatever happened to being
    Unweldfreundlich?! :^)

...Its very Unweldfreundlich...Sure Its been given "special awards" down
at the Rathhaus (rat-house)...German town hall where you hear more
about yourself than you even know....

Do you have to do an "MOT" type test in Ireland now

    Mick,

There is no Department of Environment testing for private cars yet -
this is due to come into effect in 1995. Next year, all commercial cars
and taxis will be subject to this. However, depending on the age of
your car, the insurance company will look for a garage report from
the local dealer for that make of car.

The insurance is an racket, plain and simple. If you are a male driver
under 30, you will be doing well to get a quote. If you do, it will be
in the IR1,000 region, if not more. Believe me, I know! Insurance
premiums for female drivers are considerably cheaper so you might
consider having the operation before you come home :-) :-)

    Jimmy.
