895.15 | Game and Ceremony Review | LANDO::GREENAWAY | | Mon Jun 03 1991 13:52 | 67 |
| Was at the match on Saturday and here is my impression and summary.
US 1 Ireland 1
The game was "Fair". The American style of play kept ruining the
tempo. They rarely pushed the ball up and passed it back to
keeper very frequently. The Irish squad played poor by their
standards, but were a good team to watch. Pushed the ball up a lot.
They had some good offensive bids but couldn't seem to capitalize.
As a team qualifying for the Euro cup they should have played better.
A couple of the American players looked good but the teams strategy
did nothing for their talent.
The refereeing got off to a bad start and didn't have a European ref on
their squad. The two 45 minute half were played through, and led to
good continuing play.
Quick Highlights:
- Ireland's 1st goal was called back for offsides. I wasn't watching
for the offsides but it was close. No slow mo on this play.
- Several Irish breaks, shots on net and goal.
In the 1st half the shots on net were Ireland 9 US 1.
- The American equalizing goal. A very confident and thorough chip
shot that didn't give Bonner a chance.
- a late Irish bid and shot on net that would have scored if it weren't
for one of the American players who stopped it with his head or some
say hand. I thought for sure this was a goal.
Stadium review:
+ The grass and playing area was excellent. I haven't been to Foxboro
in 7 years but the grass and field looked top notch. The sod is a
great improvement over the artificial turf.
+ The video display screen is great for review the previous play.
- They kept showing adds on the video screen during play! Not only
this but they cranked the volume which made it harder to ignore and
watch the game.
- They made serveral non game announcements over the PA and on the
video very loadly that interrupted one's attention when watching the
game.
Opening Ceremonies:
- Ray Flynn presented the Irish minister for trade some silver bowl
wearing only an open collar button shirt. All the people around
him had jacket and ties on. He look very unprofessional.
+ The Irish national anthem was sung very clearly and professionally.
With all the Irish singing along in Gaelic you'd think Ireland was the
home team.
- The American national anthem was sung by a 5 member be-bop group,
who sang their own vocal interpretation of the anthem.
This up and down verision lost everybody and sounded stupid.
I heard a few people start singing but then gave it up.
It sounded real poor in comparison to the Irish anthem.
Cheers,
Paul

895.16 | real time vs. game time? | SUPER::ST_ONGE | | Tue Jun 04 1991 09:04 | 18 |
|
Hello,
We were there too. I have just one question: what was it with the clock??
We had never been to a 'live' soccer match and failed to see the
point of having 'real' time running on the clock, and 'game' time nowhere
to be seen.
We both thought this was absurd and took away from the excitement of the
game.
I doubt I will ever go to Foxboro again, for any reason. The traffic and
chaotic parking system (not to mention getting stiffed for $10.00 to park)
was frustrating beyond belief. Silly us, we thought it would be as organized
as Great Woods....

Diane,
Welcome to Soccer! Thats the way it is...If there are any injuries
etc then the ref can add on the time lost at the end..at his
discretion. When the ball is out of play then its still game time.
(Did I explain that right????)..Gary, if your around,????????
Can't believe that they were showing ads during the game.
slainte,
Mick

| Mick,
That's interesting...thanks for clearing that up.
I did enjoy the fact that there weren't a lot of 'time outs' and the game
just flowed on.
And KeVin...the people in our section were asleep! Not a nose bleed to be
seen. I think they were all confused. All the noise was coming across the
field from your side!

895.19 | Running time | LANDO::GREENAWAY | | Tue Jun 04 1991 17:18 | 23 |
| RE: .16
I like the idea of running time with penalty time added at the
discretion of the referee. As a player or spectator you keep an
eye on the running time and when that runs out the end of the game
is in the hands of the head referee. It could be a few seconds to
several minutes. I think it adds a lot of excitement to close
games.
The Irish side was very festive (section 105). I think I heard all
of the 1990 world cup songs and had a good few of Jack Chalton's bald spot.
RE: Leaving Foxboro:
Leaving Foxboro is never easy unless you park about a mile away on Rt
1, you are the last one in the main carpark, you leave real early or
you have a great pahhhhty in the pahhhking lot after the game and just
watch all those cars stand still!
Cheers,
Paul

895.23 | Open your Eyes! | LANDO::GREENAWAY | | Thu Jun 06 1991 15:48 | 17 |
| Hey Kev,
There was either an American editing the sports channel rerun or they
didn't cover the goal on TV.
One of the Irish forwards took a long lead pass on the right side
of the box and beat the US keeper with a shot to the left hand corner
of the net. This of course was not allow due to the referee calling
offsides on the Irish. This happened very early in the game, probably
before 3-5 minutes had elapsed.
Are you sure you were at the game? Maybe you were at the wrong gate,
your tailgate! Or maybe you were still trying to sing along with
the American National Anthem when the goal was disallowed....
Cheers,
Paul

keVin and I saw that goal but we elected to blank it from our memory
banks. We both agreed that the officiating was sooooooo slanted
towards the US team Ireland didn't have a chance. But then when it
really counts as a game and not a 'pick up' game Ireland will clearly
come out on top. 8*) 8*) 8*) 8*) 8*) 8*)'s
