891.0. "IRISH VENUS NAMES" by ESSB::ANTSIONNAIGH (Unicique Suum) Fri Apr 12 1991 02:35

I read recently that the Jet Propultion Lab. in Pasadena are doing a
comprehensive survey of Venus at the moment. They have put out word
that they would like suggestions to name all the new landmarks etc.

We felt here that it would be a good idea if us Irish people around
the world inundated them with suggestions from Irish Mythology, history
Legend and so on, in the hope that some of them would be accepted.

They have some restrictions however, like the person has to be dead at
least three years, nothing really political (recent) and they want a
brief description of the names you have choosen.

The address of the JPL is :

    VENUS NAMES,
    MAGELLAN PROJECT OFFICE,
    MAIL STOP 230-201,
    JET PROPULSION LABORATORY,
    4800 OAK GROVE DRIVE,
    PASADENA,
    CALIFORNIA 91109,
    USA.

It might also be an idea if you enter your suggestions here, and we can
    share the research on it.

                Thanks

                      Ronan and Paul

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there is a major
restriction keVin - the names have to be famous WOMEN.
                                                    -----

Grainne ni Mhaille (sp?) would make an excellent crater
    though. I vote for her.
