885.0. "Pat Roper Band and Rose of Tralee Pageant" by MR4DEC::CDONAHUE () Wed Apr 03 1991 18:01

    In case anyone is interested:

Have you heard of the Festival of Kerry?
Well part of that festival is choosing an International Rose of
    Tralee.

There is a contest in Worcester on April 27th to choose a Rose,
who will then go on to Boston, and possibly represent Boston this
summer in Kerry. If anyone has a daughter, granddaughter, niece,
friend who might be interested in participating, please let me know.
The Boston Rose gets expenses paid to Ireland and a wardrobe. It is
    a pretty impressive contest.
The women must be from 18-25, and have some Irish origins. I have a
write-up of the rules that can be sent.

At the pageant on the 27th the Pat Roper Show Band will be performing.
They are from New York, and do not play around here often. They are
pretty good - dancing music, not ballads, although they do play some.
If anyone is interested in dancing to Pat, please let me know, I will
get tickets and directions to you.

    Thanks

That was very kind of you keVin, putting it that way to Paddy.
You could have told him the obvious (and real) reason:

    he's too ugly! :->

Notwithstanding the last two very impolite and deleterious replies
directed at a personage to whom I pay the greatest homage, and who
is incapable of defending himself, I would like to know when the hell
the Festival takes place in Tralee.

885.6What is the Festival of Kerry?MR4DEC::CDONAHUEThu Apr 04 1991 15:3120
The festival takes place in August. I think in the beginning. I can
find out for sure. I think it officially called the Festival of Kerry,
but WE (my circle of friends, if you will) call it the Rose of Tralee
festival. It last for a week, the Pageant is televised for 2 nights
running. There are over 30 contestents from all over the world, and
they choose the International Rose. When we were there about 4 years
ago, we had just missed the a traditional Irish music festival that
takes place around there in ....in......oh phooey ......begins with
an L......., so any way maybe it was MID August.

The festival lasts a week, it has been going on for 35 years, there is
entertainment nightly, standing room only in the streets, parades,
fireworks, a large amount of liquor is consumed(although we did not see
one fight), every house becomes a bed and breakfast. I have friends
that were born in Tralee, and some that still live there.

Mr. Culbert - I will send you the information about the contest
    tomorrow.

The people I know are all in the St. John's bagpipe band. They
came over in 1985 to be in the Worcester parade. I do not know any
Clifford's. Our connection is a person named Mike O'Driscoll who was
born in Tralee and married there, but has lived in the US for about
25 years. He cme from Ballymullen - where the Munster bar is.
We stayed with the O'Shea's on Stephan's terrace.

The one person from the band we have really kept in touch with is
Christy Switzer. He lives in Kerins Park - he used to all Ireland
Weight lifter. Do you know him? More later
