| I'm afraid I don't know what it means. Skibbereen is famous for its
(defunct??) newspaper, The Skibbereen Eagle. At the time of the Russian
Revolution in 1917, The Eagle produced an editorial that finished with
the warning "The Skibbereen Eagle will be watching you." I'm sure
Messrs. Lenin, Trotsky et al were quaking in their boots!

| The Eagle is defunct and replaced by the Southern Star.
Is there anyone who knows the English translation of the town name?

sciob (n) scramble...as in "sciob sceab ar airgead"
"scramble for money"
sciob (v) snatch...as in "sciob s� as mo l�mh �"
"he snatched it out of my hand"
sciobaire (n) snatcher
sciobair�n following on the above...a diminuitive snatcher?
All of the above may have absolutely nothing to do with the Cork
town....but it's as close as I could get.
Interestingly enough...another word on the same page that stands
out...
sciodar a) Broken sour milk
b) Thin porridge
c) Weak tea
d) Scour
e) "Scuttler; contemptible, worthless person"
Which has even less relevance to the base note...feel free to
use and enjoy.

Great!! There is a stream that flows through part of the town (in
back of O'Brien's Bar) and into the Ilen River (which is NOT small
or short). Judging by the age of some of the structures along the
stream, it must have flowed through the old centre of the village
which is about 200 metres from the present-day centre (by the
town hall and square).

More on Skib
Another guide book I have gives "Little Boat Harbor" as the
translation. Skiffs are small boats. The town started as a refuge
for people from Baltimore which was being raided in the mid 17
century. The Ilen flows into Baltimore Bay. The area is very low
and gets flooded periodically.

| Good stuff, Neil. I don't know if there is a townland but the town
lies in two parishes, Abbeystrowry and Creagh. The majority of the
town is in the former.
