860.3When is the Boston Parade?LANDO::GREENAWAYMon Feb 25 1991 16:3217
    Hello fellow Paddys!

Does anyone know the St. Patrick Day calender of events for Boston?
When is the parade...what time does it start...where does it start
    and end from?
Just found out about something on the 15th that I may be booked for.
Any particular rendezvous Pubs? Maybe Limericks.

    Cheers,
    Paul

PS. Joan and I are expecting our 2nd little Paddy or Colleen the
         first week in April.

Paul: From what I hear, the Boston St. Patricks Day parade will
actually be held on the 17th this year !!! :-)

My guess is that it will start arond noon and it is held
in South Boston. The local papers will have plenty of info.
You can look forward to many photos of Mayor Ray Flynn and
Rep. Joe Kennedy drinking green beer (yuck)

I'd stay away from the Boston Irish "Scene" during St Pat's
weekend, as I would guess most places will charge $10-$20 just
to get inside the door, and you can figure pints will be $5 in
          "Plastic Cups" !!!!

If "Brother Topaz" is reading this note, he may have more info
as to the parades time and location.

Congratulations to yourself and Joan ....

Who are the Wolf Tones, in .2? Is it a younger crowd?

Thanks, Doreen
860.7A much older crowd....indeed!!!FSOA::KSULLIVANThu Feb 28 1991 09:097
If you happen to have the slightest shred of musical taste in your
blood, you don't want to have that question answered......

Also, beware of Culbert types suggesting you go and find out for
    yourself.....at $20 a pop......

Don't listen to that Sullivan lad. His musical taste was used to
rate the 'top ten' hits of 1918. His favorite musical group is the
Dave Clark Five. He also thinks that when the Beatles wrote the song
'It's a Hard Days Night' they were experiencing a total eclipse on the
    Cape of Good Hope.

Just to set the record stright the Wolftones are probably one of the
more sensitive groups to come out of Ireland. Their songs are of a
republican slant. Their stage presence is clearly of the 'join me in
    song' type.

And they will allow the national anthem to be played.

There will not be any of the body slamming kids that are more likely to
go to a 'Pogues' or June Tabor and the Oyster Band concerts. The crowd
going to the 'Wolftone' concert will probably made up of the most refined
people in the New England area with a finely honed appreciation for
TRUE Irish Traditional music. Most of the audience will remember the
    concert the next day.

And if lucky maybe YE-3 will play at intermission.

Thanks guys. Problem is I'm not up on the current bands.

I grew up listening to bands like The Clancy Brothers, the
Dubliners, Chieftens. Good old songs like Irish Rover and
Black Velvet Band. Now that I'm grown up(?), I love those
songs which my mom used to play.

Back to the topic of this conference, ST. Patricks Day Happenings.

Does Anybody know if the three brothers who played at the
Tipperary Pub last year are returning? They where great,
	didn't catch their name.

The crowd will be all ages - honestly.
    How young is Young ?

Most of the younger Irish in the Worcester area have returned home.
The ones who were over here, in their 20's, they all went last
year. I do not know is the college students in the area will come
    to the event.

Most of the parade committee people and the supporters are middle
    aged(30's) and over!

    Doreen,
I should have read .7 and .8 first.

The tipperary in Worcester is now Owned be the Brennan Brothers!
They might be the ones that played there last year. There are
at least 3. They play mostly rock, and happy hour music -
If I refered to John Morgan type music, would that ring a bell?

Wait, no, they do play Irish music.
    I can find out.

The Plain Folk are playing at the Tip Tomorrow and Saturday

Whose national anthem? Ireland's ???

The US has a very low opinion of everyone else's national anthem, IMO.
They certainly don't give other countries' anthems the same status
accorded in Europe.

As I'm not American, I don't stand for the US national anthem. Neither
do I sing it. The school I went to in the US accepted this, but it seems
to be the worst crime in the world when you sit during the anthem at a
baseball game.

My reply was basically a rib to 'M' and to be taken lightly. But it
seems that without thet 8*) after all my remarks you were unable to
pull out my true intentions. Too bad you seemed to miss it.

You seem to critize the people of the US for not respecting other
countries National Anthem. Now, is that the total US population, or just
the few you had contact with. Personally I stand for all National
Anthems as a matter of respect to that country and it's people. IMO to
do otherwise would show my ignorance and a total lack of respect. But
then if everyone were the same this place would be very boring now
    wouldn't it.

>Anyone (who is physically able) and who refuses to stand during the playing

Well, I would think that that covers the majority of Americans then.

I certainly don't see many English standing during the playing of 'Flower
of Scotland' either. When I worked at the Commonwealth Games, I didn't see
many people standing for _any_ national anthem when the medals were being
awarded.

Another example:

At the Milwaukee Brewers Vs Toronto Blue jays baseball game I was at a
few years ago, the Canadian national anthem got just the music played.
No words, no video on the screen.

The American National anthem got the full treatment:
Video, words and music and everybody stood (well, apart from me). Given
that the Americans sat for the Canadian national anthem, I saw no reason
why I should have stood for the American one.

When you get an International match played in Europe, at least both
national anthems are played and have equal status.

>I can assure you that your insite into American ways of life is highly lacking.
Really? I only went to school in the US and got engaged to an American.

I think the American obsession with playing the national Anthem merely
serves to underline what seems to be some sort of insecurity with being
a nation. 200+ years on, many of them still see themselves as Irish, Scots
or whatever even though it was x generations removed that someone came over
from the Old Country. If the US is a country where differences are valued,
then don't you respect the opinions of foreigners which might not be in
accordance with your own? Would an American stand for the Iraqi national
anthem?

I mean, good grief, it's like brain washing your kids playing the national
anthem to them every morning in High School. I don't think even the USSR
doshes out this sort of treatment.

    Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the parade would have been on a
Sunday. I'll keep my eyes on the paper and shift to Monday if
    necessary.

    As for mingling with the "American/touristy" Irish in Boston;
Joan, myself and Maeve (then 2 1/2 yrs old) went to Limericks last year
St. Pat's Day. I was a bit surprised when I found out that they
charged $5 ahead, but ended up paying the $10 anyways.
This was around 1pm and there were a few other couples there with
kids so Meave could amused herself with them and the band, a small
    duet.
The Crack was great and felt a little like being back in Ireland
with a kids around while we had a few sips.
Around 5pm it really started to get crowded and I started to loose
sight of Maeve (from the crowd of course), so we made a move for home.

I guess some of the tourist pubs in Faneiul (sp?) Hall were charging
$10-20 admission fees. I definitely wanted to avoid them.

I hope this year to see the parade (never seen it before), hit 1 or 2
locals in Southy and hopefully move off to Limericks.
My plans c and d are to go to outskirt Irish pubs like the ? on Dot
    Ave.
I know where it is but forget it's name. I think Reagan went there
years ago. And there are always the pubs in Brighton that I
    haven't sampled yet.
If it gets to crowded in town we may adjourn back to Danvers to the
Sylvain Street Grill. A very nice sports pub and restaurant with
    good pints of Guinness.

I think I've rambled a bit.....gots to go stand up now
for I hearth the the ole anthem being played in the distance.

    Cheers,
