Subject: Re: Altan Spring Tour 1991.
Thanks for posting the information about the Altan tour.
I really recommend to everyone that they try to hear this
band. By general consensus, they are the best band currently
playing Irish traditional music. Their recordings are fine
(especially the most recent---``The Red Crow'' on Green
Linnet), but no producer or studio has yet managed to capture
in a recording what is most distintive about them. You have
to hear them live.
The core of the band is Northern---Maighread Mooney, a fiddle
player and singer from Donegal, Frankie Kennedy, a flute player
from Belfast and Ciaran Curran from Fermanagh who plays various
fretted instruments (notably the bizarre). They'll also have on
this tour Daithi Sproule who plays guitar (his best work can be
heard with Tommy Peoples on the ``Iron Man'' album) and Ciaran
Tourish, another Donegal fiddle-player. Tourish is very young
(18, I think) but he already has an astonishing reputation
among musicians in Ireland. Most of the older musicians seem to
regard him as simply the best of his generation. Maighread is
also a demon player, and she is, in my opinion, the best
practitioner of at least the Northern song tradition currently
active.
I heard Altan in Dublin just before Christmas and it was a night
to remember. They sound a lot like the early Bothy Band at
times---the same mixture of fire and discipline in the music---but
they're more consistent and more reliable. Ultimately, they're
probably better as well.

| Anyone know if they ever get to Scotland? I missed a chance to see
them out in Connemara this past summer. Too far to drive after a few
pints.
Love their music, very talented bunch. The brother saw them last
winter at the Somerville Theater and raved about them. He just wrote
me yesterday to say he was plannig to attent this years show as well
as Sharon Shannon, who is slated for an appearance there in March.
Dying to hear some trad music up here in Ayr area. Any pointers to
traditional Irish/Scottish music in the area?

854.4 | Try "The List" | IRNBRU::EDDIE | Eddie McInally, FIS, Ayr. 823-3537 | Tue Jan 18 1994 06:59 | 13 |
| Bob,
There is a celtic music season currently running at the Royal
Concert Hall in Glasgow. If you phone them they will send you a
brochure. The number is 041 332 6633.
I am reliably informed that there is a magazine which is published
every two weeks called "The List" which has details of everything
that's going on music & theatre wise in Scotland.
You may find the Scotland notes conference is more helpful with
information like this. (IRNBRU::SCOTLAND).

Hello, you've also just missed De Dannan, Dolores and Four men
and a dog. Sharon Shannon is on this sunday (23rd) I believe.
I don't know about the Ayr area, but around Glasgow the session
scene is a bit limited (though better than it was when I lived
there). I think the Scotia bar and Victoria bar have sessions or
paid bands on a few nights a week - phone to check what's on.
Also I hear the Clutha vaults has been taken over by the same
fellow who owns the Scotia, and may start doing music. All three
pubs are in the Briggait area near the river.
There is an excellent traditional music shop in Glasgow, called
'Real music'. It's in Parnie street, just off the Trongate. It
has a really good selection of Irish traditional music recordings
(it also has Scottish / British stuff).

Finally, saw Altan at the Renfrew Ferry in Glasgow on friday
last. Been waiting a long time to catch them live. A great show.
Mairead's voice is just a clear and beautiful on stage as it
is on their recordings. Frankie Kennedy was there after what looks
to have been some radical surgery. Even so he was in good form
and displayed a brilliant sense of humour.
Ciaran Curran and Mark Kelly were top notch on bozuki and guitar
and Ciaran Tourish smoked on the fiddle.
Dermot Byrne played accordion which made the evening even more of
a treat, as we had enjoyed his playing down at the Lisheen Bar
in Galway many times over the past year.
Most selections played were from "Island Angel", their latest
recording.
The Renfrew Ferry is a docked ferry with a glass conopy which
makes for a very bright setting. There are two bars serving decent
Guinness and other lesser brews. ;^)
cheers,
Bob

854.9 | Altan at Somerville Theater 5/13/95 | CTHQ::ROGERS | | Mon May 15 1995 08:54 | 10 |
| We saw Altan at the Somerville Theater Saturday night. They were really
great and the place was rocking from the stamping of hundreds of feet.
Each member of the band was in great form. The show was dedicated to the
memory of Frankie Kennedy who passed away last year.
A word of advice...if you ever go the Sommerville Theater, try to get a
seat on the lower level. The balcony is extremely tight quarters and
very hot as well.
