    Here is some information I dug up for someone recently.
    
    There are two sources in Dublin for tracing Birth details,

   (i)  General Register Office, Births Marriages & Deaths Section,
        8 Lombard St East, Dublin 2.,    Tel: (01) 711000


    They will do a five year search  i.e. b 1882, will search 1880-84.
    Need d.o.b., names, parents, parish details. Request to be made in
    writing.


   (ii) National Library of Ireland, Genealogical Office, Kildare St,
        Dublin 2.,                       Tel: (01) 618811

    They offer consultancy package to advise where to go to find likely 
    information �10 a shot, �20 for overseas.

	One of the majur problems in tracing registers of births, marriages and deaths is the lack of information. In general birth certs etc do no go back far beyond 1850. In some cases it may be even more recent than that. Also there is no cebtral record of birthes etc. Most counties keep their own. In some counties these records are scattered throughout the county. This is why if you have the town and county it is probably easier to write to the registrar of births marriages and deaths XXX Co Council Address. There is usually a fee for the certificate . An Older source of data is the Church. All the churches have baptismal records In many cases these go back as far as 1600. Also in the case of the C Of I there will be tithe books up to 1840. These give the families which exist in the areas. Some parishes are much better than others in keeping these. There may also be census data. However much of this was lost in the Custom House fire of 1920. However some still survives. However census data up to 1900 is all that is available. The rest is confidential. The Geanological Office is a good source. of Info. Their records are being computerised at the moment and should be ready for next year.
