835.0. "IRISH HISTORY HELP FOR N.U. STUDENT" by HYEND::PALM () Tue Nov 27 1990 11:42

    My son pulled a real Irishman for a room-mate at Northeastern Univ.
    in Boston. Name: Cornelius McGuillicudy from Springfield, MA. He
    has red hair and weighs in at about 275 lbs. Guess who you don't
    pick fights with? Well anyway, here's the problem. He's a really
    neat kid....just a barrel of fun but he's having problems in school
    .....got to get the G.P.A. up. He's taking alot of hard courses
    in preparation to becoming a pharmacist (i.e. chemistry etc.) So...
    in order to get the Grade Point Average up next semester, he going
    to take a course in yes....you guessed it .....Irish History!

    Need some suggestions from anyone what would be the best readings
    or favorite historial volumes he could get into...Northeastern
    just opened a great new library this fall so should have the resources
    but can go to other libraries in Boston.

    Thanks in advance for help for this great kid.

    Annie O'Palm (really my maiden name was McLaughlin) how did I ever
    get hooked up with a Pennsylvania Dutchman...oh well that's another
    story.

    Neil (Cornelius) may go over to Ireland to live if he ever becomes
    the pharmacist. Is there a shortage over there?

    Annie, you could start him with "A Potted History of Ireland"
    by our own Mike "An Nathair" Hughes. Look at note #277.

835.2Totally awesome "Snake"HYEND::PALMTue Nov 27 1990 15:586
    Totally AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for reminding me it was there. I don't seem to be able to
    forward it to myself for printing. Is it's because it's so long
    and I may not have the storage blocks? I'll try forwarding to
    my other account.

    re: Note # 277
    Was finally able to print off the Potted History of Ireland and will
    send it off to Northeastern U. today. Thanks for pointing it out.
    Any other suggestions out there?

    Annie,

    ..I'm sorry not to be able to give you the direct author of this book
    but I'm sure someone else will. Its a History book called
    "Ireland since the Famine". Its written by a pretty famous Prof. from
    Trinity College in Dublin ( died a few years ago). Twig anybodies
    memory?????

    Its quite heavy reading. I'll check out a few more from a history
    teacher I know in Dublin. Is your friend going to take a specific
    period of Irish history or keep it general?

    I wouldn't think there is much problem getting work as a pharmacist. I
    believe there is only one degree course offered in Ireland and thus
    a limited number graduate every year....

    slainte,

    Mick
835.5BOOK INFOHYEND::PALMWed Nov 28 1990 15:3811
    Thanks for the book info...will sent it on to Neil (my son Glenn's
    room-mate at NU) I believe he will be taking a course that is general
    history/culture. Hope this helps him Glenn wants to keep him around
    for St. Patrick's day in Boston. (Oh, to be young again)!

    Neil, goes over to Ireland quite often and has many relatives there
    maybe they can mail him the books if he really gets into it.

    Thanks again,

    Annie O'

    Try "A short history of Ireland" by Beckett - written from a
    slightly different bias than the Snake's
835.8Pharmacists in Ireland....TRIBES::CREANPsst! Wanna buy a computer company?Fri Nov 30 1990 04:0816
    I would advise checking carefully the employment
    opportunities for pharmacists. Firstly, I think it
    is very much a closed shop. Pharmacists are licenced
    in some way, though I'm not sure how it works, but
    apparently it is quite difficult to get admitted.
    Also in Ireland anything remotely connected with
    the medical profession has an oversupply problem.
    About half of all doctors and nurses trained in
    Ireland have to emmigrate. I saw a letter in a
    newspaper some time ago from a lady pharmacist
    who had emmigrated to Florida and tried to get
    work there. She was told she could only work as
    a pharmicist in Florida if she was a US citizen.
    However, the local citizenship classes were conducted
    entirely in Spanish, which she didn't speak!

    RE: 835.8 - Pharmacists in Ireland

    Will pass this on to our erstwhile pharmacy student. I think his
    parents want him to go over there when he's finished. Neil on the
    other hand I think wants to stay in the US of A.
