| Thanks for that Gerry. It's cheered me up no end.
This morning I read in the Melbourne Age newspaper that England beat
us 3-0 after leading 1-0 at half time. I've also had to listen to the
three pommies that I have to work with.

832.2 | The Second Round was in O'Connell St | DBOSW2::MBRENNAN | Todays best labour saver - Tomorrow | Thu Nov 15 1990 04:53 | 12 |

There was a riot after the match. About 100 supporters were arrested. The
trouble started outside the ground and spilled over into O'Connell St.
It is hard to say whether the trouble in O'Connell St was caused by supporters
of Dessie Ellis who were holding a protest march or by English supporters who
attacked it.
The police appeared to gave used the baton quite freely in an effort to break
up the trouble.

Tony, that was the result of the U-21 international play on tuesday
down in Cork. I was at the *real* match yesterday...the football was
not very pretty to watch...it was sorta like s first division local
derby game. Both sides very afraid of being beaten and as a result it
was a very tight and physical game...skill was at the races yesterday.
I won't dwell too much on the crowd trouble...suffice to say it occured
before, during and after the game :-(

Re .1 The 3-0 win by England was in the under-21 match on tuesday
night.
Highlight of the full international was Mick McCarthy's 60 yard
free kick which caught up in the wind and soared over Wood's
head, just clipping the top of the crossbar ! Overall England
will feel better about getting a draw since the Republic had most
of the play and took the game to the English. I was surprised to
see Chris Morris in place of Dennis Irwin as Irwin is a better
crosser of the ball and this could have made a difference (bar
stool coach comment).
Scotland's uncharacteristic run of good results continued with a
1-1 draw in Bulgaria; all this is setting it up for a REAL
disaster against San Marino ! Highlight of this game was the
Austrian referee who made some brilliant decisions including
booking a Bulgarian for trying to get a penalty and letting Andy
Goram off for kicking the Bulgarian striker as he lay on the
ground.
Wales beat Luxembourg 1-0 and at the moment have a pretty good
team, but are going to find it tough since Germany are in their
group.
Northern Ireland drew 0-0 in Austria which is a great result, but
are unlikely to get anywhere.
