811.0. "Celtic maps info (Gaelic/Welsh/Cornish)" by MARVIN::COCKBURN (nemo me impune lacessit) Fri Sep 21 1990 08:10

All,
On my search for a Gaelic map of Scotland, I've turned up the
following which is likely to be of interest not only to people wanting
Gaelic maps of Scottish areas, but anyone wanting maps in other languages
too (eg. Welsh, Cornish, Old Norse)

The maps available are:

Alba (Scotland, Gaelic) 1.90
Tiriodh agus Colla (Tiree/Coll, Gaelic) 1.60
Leodhas agus Na Hearadh (Lewis/Harris, Gaelic) 1.60
Uibhist agus Barraidh (Uist/Barra, Gaelic)	1.60
An t-Eilean Sgiathanach (Skye, Gaelic) 1.60
Arainn (Arran, Gaelic) 1.60

Cymru (Wales, Welsh) 1.90
Kernow (Cornwall, Cornish by Tewennow) 1.90
(This map of Cornwall is no longer in stock, although if you're
interested I would imagine the addresses below might help you
   to track down a copy)

Hjaltland (Shetland, Old Norse) 1.90
Orkneyjar ok Katanes (Orkney and Caithness,	1.90
			Old Norse)

I think there's others, my photocopy of the price list ends there though.

These are 1989 prices, sorry I don't have anything more up to date.
UK P&P add 10%, overseas orders add 50% to cover P&P and another 1
to cover bank charges. Cheque with order please.

You could try the Welsh publishers, Y Lolfa. Their address is:
Talybont
Aberystwyth
Dyfed
Cymru
UK
SY24 5HE

Their US distributors are:

Inland book company
East Haven
CT, 06512

I don't have enough Welsh to be able to make out the details in their catalogue!

        Hi,

If Y Lolfa don't have anything you could try one of the
British Tourist Authority offices - there are a few of these
but I know there is definitely one in New York, infact I read
somewhere the other day that they've just employed a Welsh
executive at this office, a Mr. John Alwyn Jones. I think this
would be worth a try. If they don't stock flags etc. I'm sure
they could point you in the right direction.

As a final thought, there is a North American Welsh newspaper
called Ninnau that might have some information or adverts on
where to buy Welsh stuff, perhaps someone else in this file
might have more information or addresses for this paper.

        HTH,

        Catrin.

There is now a Welsh only map of Wales available, based on the Ordnance
survey records. It is very good, I was looking at a copy of it last night
at Paddington station. I have the address of one of the people involved with
producing it, if anyone would like to get in touch with him for a copy.

It's an ordinary map. Contact for more info is:

Clive James

   Caernarfon (0286) 4121 est. 2377

I beleive he's fluent in Gidhlig and Welsh. Clive wrote to me in March
about my correspondence with the Ordnance survey concerning a Gidhlig
map of Scotland. He mentioned there is now a Gidhlig map of the Western
Isles which is bilingual, but which gives priority to Gidhlig. The Welsh
only map and the map of the Western Isles are produced by Estate Publications.
