A question for the Historians amongst you. Does anyone know the background to the establishment of the State/Kingdom of Kuwait. When did it happen? What initiated it's seperation from Iraq? Iraq's reaction at the time? Were there western/oil intrests involved? Any relevant background information would be appreciated. A curious M.

Re .0: Murphy, you should have a look in recent notes in STKCSC::HISTORY, the subject is quite extensively covered. But I just want to make a remark first, which is that Kuwait has NOT been separated from Iraq. It existed long before Iraq. In fact it has been a British protectorate from 1716 to 1961, while Iraq only came into existence after WWI (before that Iraq was in fact several provinces of the Ottoman empire). And the origin of the inhabitants of the two countries is quite different. Iraq has already tried to annex Kuwait in 1961 and in 1971 (or 73, I don't remember exactly) and was prevented to do it by British interventions in both occasions. Denis. | |||||
