788.1 | Galway and Cork won. | ULYSSE::COADY | | Mon Aug 06 1990 14:22 | 11 |
| Kev,
Galway beat Offaly by 6 points 1-16 to 2-7, Offaly scored 1-1 in the
last 2 minutes.
Cork beat Antrim - 9 points I think, but I'm not sure.
I believe Galway looked fairly hot, butthen Cork on ALl Ireland day is
another story, as I so well remember.

| From the Irish Emigrant 6th August 1990, Editor Liam Ferrie @GAO
All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship - Semi-final:
Cork 2-12 Antrim 1-13
Galway 1-16 Offaly 2-7
- Cork got off to a great start, taking their points with ease,
and had at least five on the scoreboard before Antrim put one
over the bar. Late in the first half Antrim did make some
impression but Cork always maintained a comfortable lead. At
half-time the score was 1-10 to 0-6. The Corkmen started the
second half with a flourish and it looked as though they might
notch up a record score. Among the scores at this time was a
fine goal after two minutes from John Fitzgibbon. When Ciaran
Barr scored a beautiful goal about midway through the half
there were hopes that we were going to see a comeback. The
difference was reduced to six points for a brief period. At
about this time two remarkable reflex saves from a most unfit
looking Niall Patterson in the Antrim goal should have inspired
the Ulstermen but it was Cork who continued to add on the
points. Antrim must be disappointed with their performance.
Some of their stars were guilty of missing chances which they
would have taken with ease on other occasions. Some questions
were asked about the Cork team but in fact they were always in
control and played as well as required. Antrim was without
Olcan McFetridge and Terence McNaughton, the former through
injury while the latter was suspended by the county board after
an incident with a county official at a recent training
session.
- If the 40,000 plus crowd at Croke Park thought the first
game was one-sided any hopes that the second would be
different were quickly dispelled. If the Galway forwards had
shown any degree of accuracy the game would have been beyond
the reach of the young Offaly side before they got their first
point. Right from the opening whistle Galway turned on a fast,
skilful and determined performance. Those who missed the
excitement of a close contest must have been satisfied with the
fine display of hurling from this Galway team. A goal from the
foot of Eanna Ryan after 32 minutes helped Galway to a 1-9 to
0-3 lead at the end of the first half. Danny Owens got a goal,
also from his foot, midway through the second half but only the
most optimistic Offaly supporter could have viewed this as a
comeback. The points difference between the teams was seldom
as close as it was in the end. With one minute to go Galway
led by ten points . A goal from Paddy Corrigan and a point
from Cahill gave the score some respectability for the record
books. Injuries forced Offaly to start without Joachim Kelly
and Brian Whelehan but they won't be using that as an excuse
for their defeat. Few teams could have stood up to Galway on
the day. For the record, Conor Hayes, who twice captained
Galway to All-Ireland success, was dropped and there was no
Sylvie Linnane on the team either.
- Cork defeated Derry in a minor semi-final.

Heard an unusual bet on the match yesterday between a Cork and Tipp man
..The loser having to sign up for a 3 day pilgrimage to Lough Derg
( A "serious" sinners place by the sound of things)
Galwegian sinners wanted for the same thing..(I"ll only pass on the
names though) Galway Tipp match in two weeks.

I remember that they broadcast the semis a couple of years ago but have
no idea whether they did the same last year.

Will the match be shown at St. Aquinas in Netwon or has the venue
changed ?? I'd hate to show up only to find that the broadcast isn't
being picked up.

Well I have finally arrived back after a week at the Horse Show. The fillies
were mighty.
Well Kilkenny and Tipp are through to the All Ireland Hurling final. The same
pair meet in the Minor final - so there will be a shortage of tickets. Any spare
ones flying about Boston or New York?
Antrim beat Kilkenny everywhere but on the scoreboard. Kilkenny have been hurled
off the feld in their last 3 games but still won.
Tipp on the other hand looked very impressive while disposing of a weak Galway
challenge. Galway relied too much on the use of timber and it did not work.
On the evidence dso far Tipp should win the All Ireland easily but then as they
say thats another day. Kilkenny have not succeeded in getting more that about 3
hurlers to play a good game together. The last time that this Kilkenny team
hurled was against Tipp in the league. If they repeat that form anything
can happen.
So roll on September.

Nicky English and Cormac Bonner both went down with injuries in the

Tipp seemed unable to generate any offense from their forwards once the

Mr Brennan took one look at McGraths before the match and decided there were too
Many people around and no porter. This was about 10:45
He then proceeded down to Meaghers and proceeded to drink a copious quantity of
pints. He noticed that the senior ref was there to so that by the time the
senior match started he was well and truly lubricated.
Enjoyed the day. Kilkennys luck ran out and they missed about 3 goals in first
half. However thats the nature of the game. The game was in the balance until
the Tipp Goal.
Didnt get back to Meaghers afterwards. This was dut to other comitments.
However as I said before A good day was had by all.
