778.1 | Touring weather better in May or June? | LANDO::ODONNELL | | Wed Jan 26 1994 16:19 | 15 |
|
Planning a trip over in either late May or June 1994 timeframe with two
neophytes, and was about to call the Irish Tourist Board, but decided
to stop and ask here first:
1. When is the weather at it's best? May or June
2. Any eclectic festivals or events that are just a grand time?
I attended the Oyster Festival in Galway last year, and had a
great time with the people I had a chance to have a taste with.
Thanks in advance,
_Kevin

778.2 | June is better. | AYOV25::JDOOLEY | | Fri Jan 28 1994 04:18 | 8 |
| June would be better for touring, weatherwise. Unlike certain parts of
the U.S, Ireland does not get extremes of hot or cold weather, while it
is rare enough for the temperature to drop below freezing in winter it
rarely gets hotter than 28 or 29 degrees Celsius in the Summer.
Rain is the big consideration in Ireland, make sure to bring plenty of
raingear just in case.
Early May could still have the raw coldness of Spring in it so June is
better for that reason.

778.3 | 25 Degrees? Some Hope! | SIOG::CASSERLY | Eireannach is ea me | Fri Jan 28 1994 08:04 | 7 |
| It would be very optimistic to expect 23-25 degrees this year,
considering we have been inundated with wet wet wet weather since the
first week in June last year.
If memory serves me right, we have had a great spell of weather in
May this last two years and the summer died a death after that.

778.4 | Actually, I'd go in July! | KURIUS::LIBOVE | | Fri Jan 28 1994 09:36 | 11 |
| I was in Ireland (in Galway, all times) March 1993, May-July 1993, and November 1993.
The hottest day ever was just about 70F / 21C, averaging much less. July was probably
the absolute best weather and temperature month of the year.
May would definitely be chancing bad early Spring holdover weather. July also has
the advantage of longer days (~5:00am to ~10:30pm).
Regardless of when you go, though - GO! Ireland is wonderful!

778.5 | cold!!! | BERN01::BYRNE | | Fri Jan 28 1994 10:13 | 8 |
| I was in Ireland last June from the 20th to the 30th.
It was pretty cold most days, between 14 and 18C - aran jumper and light
jacket - definetly not shorts weather. We toured the west coast.
The hottest day was about 26C in Cork !

778.6 | I enjoyed May more than June in 1992 | SNELL::ROBERTS | he's a high tech redneck! | Fri Jan 28 1994 12:52 | 6 |

I think late MAY is the best month to tour the country side if you enjoy
wild flowers. also, airfare rates increase after June 1st (seasonal).

only time this happened was at "seajan ua neactain" when the
pipes leaked from the ladies loo upstairs.
Ooops! that incident was not at Neactain's. It was "The Quays"
nearby...

| What kind of weather and temperatures can we expect along the west
coast during the last week in August and First in September? We'll be
visiting Shannon, Doolin, Galway and the Achilles.

Hi Jim,
When you visit Achilles watch out for his heel %^)
End of August, early Sept is usually good weather wise in the West (it does not
vary that much from Achill to Doolin, but if the sun is splitting the rocks in
Achill and you are in Doolin under 3 feet of water dont blame me %*))
The temperture could be in the low 60's,during the day very mild at night too.
Of course it could rain a lot which brings the temp down to the
mid 50's. Anyway come prepared and you will not be caught unawares. Bring
shorts, T shirt, woolie jumper and rain gear. You will probably get to use
them all in the same day. %^)
If you require any further info, especially on Achill drop me a line.
Enjoy your trip!

778.13 | here's hoping for reasonable weather ! | CTHQ::COADY | | Tue Aug 02 1994 17:55 | 7 |

Gee how one forgets; its a long time since I have heard 60 degrees
defined as a warm day :=), I must be too long gone.
Lets hope its at least in the 60's as I'm there on the last week of
August also and I guess it will be sunny unless it rains between the
showers.
