-< IRELAND vs ITALY/URUGUAY >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ireland have just defeated Romania 5-4 on penalties following a
scoreless match which according to the BBC world service was
played in opressive heat. It was 4-4 when Romania missed their
fifth penalty Bonner savinbg well. Dave O'leary playing his first
match of the finals stepped up to blast the ball past goalkeeper
Lung in the Romanian goal. Scenes of absolute jubilation among the
Irish players and their 20,000+ supporters followed the dramatic
climax to a match.

Only three more matches and we'll have won the World Cup! Bring on
Italy/Uruguay. Nobody will find us easy to beat now.

Keith,

You're right, only 3 more matches for Ireland. But don't forget that
the last match will be against Belgium and you will NOT win it.

Conclusion: Yes, 3 more matches to go, but you will not be the world
champion. Something logical in it, isn't it ?

Luc.

PS: I'm form Belgium.

As a point for future readers of this notesfile England got through
against Belgium in the last SECONDS of extra time with a goal from
Platt .

777.4Rome here we come!!!!!!!!!KBOMFG::KEYESWed Jun 27 1990 09:4514

..Back in spirit from Genoa. Lord have mercy but it was MAD!!!!
Serious session before and after the game.

Anyone in Ireland got news on how the tickets are going to fare out.
Will they be on sale on the day???/. Ihear we have a very small
allocation so far. In genoa people queued for hours and hours. However
people arriving about 30 min before the game simply walked to the
ticket outlet at the stand and got tickets. Might not be so easy for
the Italian game.

Win loose or draw it will be another mighty session.

Mick
777.5Have your money ready....MACNAS::JDOOLEYThe man they couldn't hangThu Jun 28 1990 05:1611
The original allocation was a miserly 2000 tickets.
Irelands Minister for Sport appeared on TV last night to relate
how negotiations with FIFA were going.6000 tickets were obtained
well short of the 16000 required.
Ray Treacey ,former international player,now a Travel Agent here
in Ireland related how he was offered tickets at up to 250 pounds
each well in excess of their face value.
It seems the money grabbers are at it again..........
Good Luck to all ticket hunters.

777.6tickets, tickets, tickets !ULYSSE::COADYThu Jun 28 1990 08:3716

There were some tickets available here ( France) at about 100-150
pounds, thru the Football clubs, but I believe they were all bought up
by ticket touts.

In Genoa, when the touts realised there were more than enough tickets
at the gate, they dropped their prices by 25% on the FACE VALUE of the
ticket, so in fact they were cheaper than the official ones.

I reckon that won't happen in ROME, particularly with Italy playing and
I guess its an expensive place to fly on spec. or to have pay 250+
punts -or is it :=).

I don't intend to pay black market prices until the final and we play
England !

777.7IRELAND'S CUP PROGRESSESMCIS2::MCCARTHYThu Jun 28 1990 13:0916
I WAS READING AN ARTICLE IN THE IRISH TIMES LAST NIGHT, IT SAID THAT
THE ITALIANS WERE ECSTATIC THE IRISH BEAT THE ROMAINIANS, AS THE
ITALIANS FEARED THE ROMAINIANS, NOW THEY EXPECT TO MAUL THE IRISH MUCH
AS THE LIONS DID THE CHRISTIANS IN EARLY ROME.
ITALIANS BEWARE! WHEN TIMES ARE ARE DARKEST THE IRISHMAN SHINES, WITH
ENOUGH LIGHT TO BRIGHTEN THINGS UP.
ITALIAN FANS,OFFICIALS,SUPPORTERS BEWARE OF THAT 3-0 PREDICTIOS FOR
IT COULD VERY WELL BE REVERSED WITH IRELAND THE WINNER.
THERE WILL BE MUCH GUINNESS (PINTS) CONSUMMED STARTING AT 15:00 HRS
IN SATURDAY, I AIM TO HAVE MY SHARE,(BIG SCREEN TV,IRISH
CLUB,WORCESTER)GOOD LUCK! IRISHMEN WHERE EVER YOU ARE.WE HAVE COME TO
FAR TO GIVE UP OR LOSE NOW.

Today's "Irish Indepedent" carries the front page news that intesive
political negotiation caused the sudden appearence of an extra 8,500
tickets.this will ease the situation.
People here are still advised not to travel to Rome unless they
have a ticket arranged already.
Day trips are costing 525 pounds here , one of the lads here is
going and said so.
I suppose its a once in a lifetime thing ...........but 525 pounds!
Thats approx $850 for a trip to Rome from Ireland.
All the Nation awaits with bated breath for 8:00 pm Saturday 30th
June 1990.

IT WAS ONE HELL OF A MATCH! TO HAVE A TEAM PLAY SO HARD TO THE POINT
OF OUT PLAYING THE ITALIANS ONLY TO LOSE 1-0. THE OFFICIATING COULD
HAVE BEEN A DAMN SIGHT BETTER. THE BOYS DID THEMSELVES AND US PROUD.

WITH LUCK WE'LL SEE THEM IN BOSTON FOR THE NEXT WORLD CUP. THEN WE'LL
SEE HOW MANY FANS SHOW UP. THERE WILL PROBABLY BE ANOTHER CIVIL WAR IF
THAT HAPPENS, THE NORTH END VS SOUTHIE. THE PRIDE IS WITH ALL OF US

777.11O'Schallacci must be Irish !ULYSSE::COADYTue Jul 03 1990 06:5336

Well it is all over, but it was fun ..... Rome was exciting, even tho we lost.

The Irish supporters continued their sing-song, some can not go into Print,
but a few of them I liked were

" DayO, DayO,DDDDDD DayO, Schalacci scored and we gotta go home "
etc etc.

and
Schalacci, Schalacci
6 foot two and eyes of Blue, our Mick is after you
Scalacci, Schalacci
5 foot two and Black and Blue - our Mick got you.

Mind you I think the greatest stunt of the evening was about 3o mins after the
match .... the 10,000 Irish fans were singing "We want Jack", next thing
under the stand, flash lights were popping and and camera men/reporters running
towards the dressing rooms. The fans went crazing thinking Jack Charlton was
on his way and the roars and clapping was beyond belief...... the entourage
got closer and all of a sudden it was obvious -

it wasn't Jack Charlton it was

Charlie Haughey  -

what a stunt he pulled, almost as good as the Tour de France when Roche won

PS

There were loads of tickets in Rome at way below face value.
