766.0. "Rail service? " by MAMIE::OLOUGHLIN (The fun begins at 80!) Mon Jun 11 1990 11:45

My girlfriend and I will be visiting starting on the 26th.
We would like to take a railway trip from some place near Galway,
or Shannon, up to Trim? If not Trim, Dublin. Would anybody
    care to suggest a route?

We will be meeting friends at Trim who just left Saturday.

       Rick.

766.1Relax and let the train take you!CLADA::BENOTue Jun 12 1990 10:2911
There are five train departures from Galway to Dublin mon-sat at
    06:05(dep) - 08:50(arr),
    08:00-10:25,11:35-14:20,15:10-18:05,18:25-21:20 all through trains.
I've taken the service many times and it is quite good.

There are also about 10 trains per day from Limerick Junction (closest
train station to Shannon) to Dublin a 8:30 and 18:30 1.5 hour express
and the rest taking a little over 2 hours. I've never taken this
    service.

I don't see Trim on any schedule.

    re .1

Frank, I think the 06:05 train only operates on a Monday, but I'm
sure that's irrelevant as it is unlikely to be the first choice!

Hasn't Limerick got a railway station? I understand (but am not
totally sure) that you can get a train from Limerick to Dublin,
which goes via Limerick Junction. Limerick being much closer (30
mins) from Shannon than Limerick Junction, easier on the feet :-)

    re .0

How about a bus? No direct service to Trim, but the service from
Galway to Dublin will drop you in Enfield or Kilcock, about fifteen
miles from Trim. There is also a service that drops you in Athboy,
roughly the same distance again. Maybe you could get your friends
to pick you up if they had a car (or knew someone who had!).
If you do go by train you then have to get a bus from Dublin.

Bus ireann is the state bus company, but there are other private
outfits....so inquire at the Tourist Information in Galway if you
    are considering that option.

Mike, you are indeed correct 06:00 on Monday only. Yes, you can go
from Limerick to Dublin via Limerick Junction by changing trains.
Its about a 30 minute train ride from Limerick to Limerick Junction.
Come to think of it, I did ride this train once years ago. I took a
cheap charter flight from New York to Shannon. Stood in the rain for
15 minutes (It always seemed to rain in Shannon) and caught the bus
outside the door for Limerick .

Get a train from Limerick. It will bring you via Limerick Junction (in Tipp)
Portlaoise, Portarlington and numerous other small towns to Heuston Station
In Dublin head straight for Ryans pub in Parkgate St. You will soon forget
about Trim.

Seriously though you can get a bus to Trim from The central Bus Station (Busaras)
The bus takes about an Hour to reach Trim.

P.S. The Dec office in Dublin is only a little way from Heuston.. KeVin Burns
(The well known Clare reprobate and sheep stealer) will explain where it is.

We'll have a car while we run around Shannon, Galway and so on.
Both of us would like to take a short rail trip. We thought we
would do that from someplace up to Dublin or Trim. Looks like we
will rail up to Dublin and rent another car to go to Trim.

Our friends, Rick Gaynor, (grew up in Rathmolyne <sp?>) and Catrina
(Mangan) Gaynor, (grew up in Trim) are there now showing off their
three week old girl, Claire, to family. Deb and I are going to
vacation with them for a couple of days. (...and I am sure that
Rick and I will be at Tornies on Baggot Street for a couple of scoops
if we can get the girls to go shopping. Ha! No problem there!)

Aside from that. Is it true that if I show my DEC badge at the
AVIS counter I can get 35% off the rate?

       Looking forward to this trip.

...and thank you for the information.

       Rick.

I will be at the DEC Dublin office once or twice. I may be on
vacation but it is *STILL* end of year and there is alot of revenue to
    chase.

       Rick.

    Rick,

If you"re in Rathmolyon, look up my first cousin Martin Ford for a REAL
mad night out...thats if he"s not locked up already.....

Anyone WANTING to take a trip on Irish Rail must be paid too much...

    Have a good holiday anyway

If your cousin is from Rathmolyon, he more than likely knows Ricky
Gaynor. Rick was my roommate for awhile and my girlfriend and I are
    good friends of the family.

From what I understand, Rathmolyn is such a small town they must
    know each other.

       Rick.

    Rick,

I guess the Fords must account for about half the local population
then, as my aunt had about 15 children. As I recall, its only got one
pub. When I was last there in the early 80's, the public telephone had
a handle you had to crank to get a line so its not exactly space-age
there. Just what you want for a nice quiet holiday (until you meet
    Martin!)

    Regards,

766.10I'll be back soon.MAMIE::OLOUGHLINThe fun begins at 80!Mon Jul 16 1990 13:1313

I didn't get a chance to look up Martin. Too much to do and not
enought time. Spent four days in Trim towards the end of the trip.

The greatest part of the trip was the Italian/Irish match that we
watched at the Dropping Well outside of Dublin. It was wild.

      Rick.

PS: ...and I didn't ever step foot in a DEC office!
