Hi,
I can assure you it will be expensive-Group C car ( 1600cc ) will cost
you 32.50 + 10% Vat + petrol per day - thats what it cost me at Xmas.
I guess a Group A car would be about 22 plus VAT.
Petrol is about 2.90 a gallon - or has it changed in the last 12
months.
You could phone either the Galway, Clonmel or Dublin offices and ask
them and also ask them to make the reservation for you.

| The Galway Avis rental a car will give a 35% discount (when you show
your Digital badge) off the rack rates. Why don't you call the Galway
Travel department (DTN: 822-2486) and see if that rate or any special
weekly rate will apply.

Haven't stopped by to say hi for awhile, so I feel abit guilty with
this whinning note on Avis.
Deb and I rented the car at Shannon on the 26th of June. Showed
them my badge and were quoted a price. Got a Toyota Corolla for a few
pound more. Told them I was going to turn the car in at Dublin on the
5th of July, next week Thursday.
Get the visa bill and almost fell over. $648.99!!! Called Avis
world HQ to question the bill. 220 for the rental, 115 insurance,
33 tax, 12 for the petrol, times the current rate. Ouch!
It would seem they, the girl at the Shannon Avis counter told me the
weekly rate instead of the rate I was paying to rent for the 10 days.
It still hurts to think of paying 64 dollars a day to rent a car *WITH*
the company discount.
AND I DIDN'T EVEN WRECK THE CAR!!!
Oh well. It was the best vacation we've ever had.

I visited Ireland in August '90, rented a 1600 car for 1 week.
Got my Amex bill ..............$440.00, and had a fit.
I returned to U.S. , went on a business trip to Cleveland for
3 weeks, rented a car ....got Amex bill $450.00.
Something is very wrong somewhere over there........

I know the feeling, every time I go home it kills me to spend that kind
of money, roughly equivelant to 150 pints of Guinness.
The main reasons is because of the high cost of new cars in Ireland,
mainly due to VAT and Duty - I would say that you average 1600 cc car,
must now cost around 13k punts = $25k. Thats a hell of a lot more than
USA prices.
Also car insurance, petrol and servicing aint cheap.
Still I now honestly feel that compared to France ( where car renting
and petrol is not much cheaper ) overall Ireland is cheaper.

759.6 | Car are a LUXURY here | MACNAS::JDOOLEY | The man they couldn't hang | Mon Jan 07 1991 04:28 | 33 |
| You have hit upon one of our governments favourite targets for taxation
the car.
THeir twisted logic goes like this:-
A car is a luxury since most people could walk or cycle to work
etc. Disabled people are allowed some relief from the tax.
Heavy car taxation helps trade balance as we don't make cars and hence
have very little jobs in them. There is no lobby here like Detroit in
the States.
On the other hand we have very poor public transport, have a low
density of population (factories tend to be scattered far apart in the
west and people have to travel far to get to work) and our weather is
atrociously wet compared to mainland Europe or the States.
The government merely uses these factors to extort more tax from
the already hard-pressed taxpayer.
Insurance is a nightmare with average premia running at 681 pounds
for a standard 1.2 litre saloon.
Performance cars and drivers under 25 find it almost impossible to
insure.
Petrol costs 3 pounds a gallon or roughly $4.50 a U.S gallon.
There are certain advantages to the situation:-
Our roads are relatively quiet by U.S or E.C standards.
Second hand car prices are relatively higher than same.
Once you splash out the money you stand to keep the value of your car
over a longer time than elsewhere.
Car repair and second-hand spares are an art-form here;very little
goes to waste. THis should keep the greens happy.
Journeys are not as frivilously taken here as in the states, because
of the high Gas Tax,again the greens will be happy.
I went to the states Last year for the first time and the cost
(low) of motoring astonished me.
On the other hand the cost of accomodation and services (high)
also astonished me.It looks like a swings and roundabouts thing to me.

Well Deb and I plan on going back this summer. I'll talk to Danny
Mangan first and see if I can rent a car from one of the lads before
I drop close to seven hundred bucks for a week. (I think it was
something like 682. A couple of notes back.)

I did, and they did. From 1 June to 5 June 1991, picked-up Opel Kadet at
Dublin Airport, dropped-off at Cork Airport. Cost CA$134!!
Mind you, the bit about the bent rim and the 'slow puncture' may have
been an impetus for them to 'do a deal'.
I also rented a Ford Siera at Heathrow from 5 June to 23 June for
Stg98 per week. This was with Avis and I received the Digital
corporate rate (refused CDW and PAI which were covered by my Gold
card).

Do anyone know of any more "reasonable" rates ??
