743.0. "Cumann na Gaeilge meeting - Piaras O'Gaora" by TALLIS::DARCY () Wed Apr 18 1990 20:43

Piaras O'Gaora to speak at Cumannn na Gaeilge Meeting:

The next meeting of Cumann na Gaeilge (The Boston Irish Language
Society) is on Sunday, April 22, at 7:30 pm at St. Clement's Hall
of St. John's Seminary, Foster Street, Brighton Massachusetts.
The program for the evening is "The Folk Stories of Ireland".
Ireland has a rich heritage of folklore including many folk stories,
which have been passed from generation to generation in the oral
tradition. Although the tradition has almost vanished in Ireland
todya, scholars were able to record much of it from the storytellers
of this century, such as Peg Sayers and Liam Burke.

Piaras O'Gaora from Ros Muc, Connemara is well acquainted with this
tradition. His father was the well known author Colm O'Gaora.
Piaras was educated at the University College Galway and De Paul
University. He wa one of the founders of Free Radio Connemara,
the first all-Gaelic radio station, which operated from his home
in Ros Muc. Later he was the first permanent news editor of Radio
na Gaelteachta. Piaras will recount fome of the great Irish folk
stories, giving their interpretation and background in folklore.

Before the meeting at 6:15 there will be Mass in Gaelic celebrated
in the Chapel of St. Clement's Hall. Foster Street, Brighton, goes
from Washington Street to Commonwealth Avenue. St. Clement's Hall
is approximately 0.3 miles from either end of Foster Street. Parking
is provided in the paved area north (to the right) of St. Clement's
Hall. Admission is free ad open to the public. For information call
    508-369-4979.
