740.7 | "Irish Names for Children" | AIAG::GAVIN | | Mon Apr 23 1990 11:12 | 11 |
| re: .6 One such book is "Irish Names for Children" by Patrick Woulfe, published
by Gill & Macmillan, Ltd. Goldenbridge, Dublin 8.
The book was first published in 1923, but was revised in 1967 by Gerard Slevin.
The copy I have seen has a 1974 copyright by Gill and Macmillan, and a 1967
copyright by Gill & Son. There seems to be a bias toward boys names though.
There's an appendix which shows Irish Saint's holy days for each day of the
year.
Does anyone know where it is possible to buy this book in the Greater Boston
area?

740.8 | Meara is a pretty one | CSC32::ANNIN | | Thu Apr 26 1990 19:46 | 13 |
| Hi,
There is also a babynames notes conference and there are (were last I
looked) several notes on just such requests as yours. My daughters
are:
Catherine - I believe it means PURE, and there are several more
traditional variations
Meara - meaning Mirth or Joy.
Good luck with the blessed event. My husband and daughters are
CALLAGHANs, so we too wanted first names to fit with the sirname.

| A niece of mine was born just two weeks ago and she is going to
be christened 'Niamh'(pronounced Neev and means saint,I think?)
However, Meara sounds a nice name also. BTW O'Meara is an Irish
surname too.

| .9 be christened 'Niamh'(pronounced Neev and means saint,I think?)
Well,as per usual,I was way-off the mark. Niamh actually means
'bright'...and in old Irish mythology she was the princess of the
'land of promise' and eloped with Fionn Macul's son. Also, it was
written about her at the time...that she was one of the four best
women that a man could 'sleep' with....wait 'til I tell me brother
this ;-)
The Anglisized version of the name is 'Niav'

740.11 | AILISH/AISHLING ?? | MEALA::OHARA | | Fri Sep 14 1990 10:00 | 16 |
| In case I am not too late.
My own daughter is called AILISH (as pronounced) which is also
sometimes spelled EILISH (It is a derived from Elizabeth) .
My own choice was AISHLING (pr. ASHLING) which means DREAM in Irish.
My wife refused as it reminds her of a hotel in Dublin with the same
name. I am sorry I did'nt stick to my guns.
My son is called CONOR.
Best of luck with the happy blesses event.
Rgds
