723.0. "ERRATIC/ERRANT US/Ireland mail!?" by CARRIK::ONEILL (Its a LONG way to Tipperary...) Tue Mar 06 1990 10:57

    	Has anyone been having problems mailing home (Ireland from U.S.)
    recently?? I usually write a letter/week, and Ive been told that
    they havent received one from me for over a month...

    	To make matters worse, I send my PASSPORT via REGISTERED MAIL
    home to Ireland on January 31st, for renewal (I KNOW I could have
    had it renewed here, but last time I was hope I filled in the forms,
    had the photos taken, had the Punts ready etc etc and figured it'd
    be less hassle to have my dad do it for me...sigh!) - anyway my
    b****y passport has not arrived in Ireland - YET! I filled in a
    form at the P.O. to have them do a 'trace' on the mail - anyone
    know how SAFE REGISTERED MAIL is? Or initiated one of these 'traces'
    to have them locate a lost reg. mail?

    	If the thing is lost has anyone gone thru the process of contacting
    the Embassy here and having a new passport re-issued? I hope it
    wont be too painful since I do have my registered mail receipt to
    'prove' I sent it to Ireland etc - for what thats worth to the Embassy
    of course....

    	The worrying/scary thing is that IM STUCK HERE until I get my
    passport back/renewed/replaced!!!!!!!! eeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkKKKK!!!!

723.1You can always go home!CLADA::BENOTue Mar 06 1990 12:236
    Actually, all you would probably need to get back into Ireland would be
    an old expired passport or birt cert, etc. anything to prove you are an
    Irish citizen. Getting BACK into the US would be the problem (unless
    you have a green card) of going and getting a visa stamp again.
    I have never had mail lost from Ireland to the USA but several times
    had mail from the USA to Ireland go missing.
723.2Don't rush home now!AUSTIN::OREILLYEire in '90 or '91Wed Mar 07 1990 14:2012
    Ann,

    There might be a conspiracy among us to keep you here! ;-)

    The USA will be all the better for it!

    Good luck as we certainly wouldn't you to have problems getting back
    here once you've left!

    Good luck,
