Someone sent me a message asking about Irish language summer courses.
I have enclosed below details of the courses run by Oideas Gael.
I highly recommend these courses. I have attended them myself for a week
or two every year since they first started six years ago, and each
year the courses have expanded and become more popular.

About half the pupils are from Ireland. The remainder are from about
an equal mixture of Ireland, Scotland, United States, Canada, and other
countries. There have been pupils from Japan, Israel, France, Germany,
and Australia. The level ranges from complete beginner to top grade
high school teacher. There are only three or four classes levels,
though, so if you are a complete beginner you are best to do about
twenty hours work yourself before coming, otherwise you are likely to
find it very hard work to start with and will enjoy it less. The
course in Gleann Fhinne is probably less suitable for complete
beginners than those in Gleann Cholm Cille. The scenery is great,
and the courses make a very good holiday, as well as what you learn.

I think it is safe to say that the Oideas Gael courses are most suited to
independent summer visitors from abroad. There are other courses run by
other people, though. There are courses Downings, north Donegall, usually
from about 16 July to 6 August. These are cheaper, more flexible and less
intensive. Details from Maire Nic Oscair, 8 Magheralane Road, Randalstown,
Co. Antrim, Ireland, Tel Randalstown 72271. There are courses run by
Galway University (I think) in the Conamara Gaeltacht. These are intensive
and good, I believe, but are much dearer than the Oideas Gael courses.
There are courses run by Gael Linn in Dublin at various times of the year,
but I don't have details. The only Scottish Gaelic summer courses which I
know of are run at Edinburgh University, and at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the
Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye. I could chase up information on these
other courses if anyone wants, or perhaps anyone who has further
information could send it to GAELIC-L.

My rule of thumb is that Gaelic is about twice as much work to learn
as languages like French, German, Italian, which are more akin to English.
Things are proportionally harder at the beginning when all the vocabulary
and everything is new, and the going gets easier later on as things start
to click and you start getting some rewards for your efforts.
