I'd like to find out about the claddagh (sp?) symbol - the two hands holding a heart, with a crown over the heart. Is this a traditional Irish good luck symbol? Some sort of love symbol? Does it have any special meanings when given as a gift? Thanks! Chris M.

Chris, My knowledge on the claddagh is that it originally was used as long ago as a wedding ring. Over the years this tradition has been lost. When its worn with the 'heart' pointed into the body it means that that persons heart it 'taken' if worn with the heart pointed away from the body it signifies that that persons heart is still 'free'. Don't know anything about the crown. Good Luck, Ann

The hands are there for friendship, the heart is there for love. For loyalty throughout the year, the crown is raised above.

They're gathered all together in a very precious theme. My tiny bit of Ireland, my little claddagh ring. |
