651.0. "Low lie the fields..." by HYEND::SECRETARY_2 () Thu Sep 28 1989 14:37

Can anyone help me with the words of a song?

The end of the chorus goes something like this:

"..and I never will forget, the sweet maiden I met, in the Valley
    of Shree(sp?) na mar."

I remember some of the rest of the song, but I won't embarass myself
by trying to put it in here!

Also, if any musical CELT-ies could by chance send me the words
and music (read:guitar chords) to the song "The Fields of (don't
laugh now! ;-)) Athen Rye. (Purely a phonetical spelling, please
forgive my ignorance!!) I did a school retreat this past May in
Eniskillen, and a young girl played it for me. Her whole family
played and sang together as a group, and she really wow'ed me...
But, alas the week was such that I never found time to get the
words and music from her. Now I'm regretting it!! I would really
appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to get a tape of it.

    Thanks!!

    -Lorelei

I think the song you're talking about is The Valley of Slievenamon.
Slievenamon is a mountain in Tipperary. Kevin or myself should
have a tape of Athenry too.
651.3Ye-3 only MA. appearance this year.......PENUTS::KSULLIVANThu Sep 28 1989 15:094

It's seen the inside of a few pubs in Dublin, the Jolly
Beggarman being it's favorite, of course!! ;-)

I actually DID sing that song in a pub in Clearwater Florida
a few years ago ...(I'm pretty sure the place is closed now) :-)

Low, lye, the Fields of Athenry,
Where once we watched the small free birds fly,
Our love was on the wing, we had dreams and song to sing,
It's so lonely round the Fields of Athenry

    Lorelei,

The Pogues are singing about ye.

I'll try and send it over tomorrow.

    	My lonely prison walls
They heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they are sending you away!"
    	"For you stole Trevellian's corn
so the young might see the morn."
"Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."

Low lie the fields of Athenry,
where once we watched the small free bird fly.
Oh, our love was on the wing,
we had dreams and songs to sing.
It's lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

    	My lonely prison walls,
they heard a young man calling.
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free!"
"against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled. They ran me down."
"Now you must raise our child in dignity."

Low lie the fields of Athenry,
where once we watched the small, free bird fly.
Oh, our love was on the wing,
we had dreams and songs to sing.
It's lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

    	My lonely harbour walls,
they watched the last star falling,
as the prison ship sailed out along the quay.
But she'll hope, and watch, and pray
for her love, in Botany Bay.
It's lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

Low lie the fields of Athenry,
where once we watched the small, free birds fly.
Oh, our love was on the wing,
we had dreams and songs to sing.
It's lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

So lonely 'round the fields of Athenry.

I got these words by listening to the live version by the Wolfe
Tones on _Live_Alive_O_ . The recording isn't the best, so I guessed
at a few of the words based on context. If anyone has corrections,
    feel free to post.

Alone, all alone, by the wave-washed strand
and alone here in a crowded hall.
The hall, it is gay, and the waves, they are grand.
But my heart is not here at all.

It lies far away, by night and by day,
to the times and the joys that are gone.
But I never will forget the sweet maiden I met
    	in the valley near Slievenamon.

Oh, it was no tthe grace of her queenly fare,
nor her cheeks of the rose's glow,
nor her soft, black eyes, nor her flowing hair,
nor was it her lily white brow.

'Twas the soul of truth, and her melting rue,
and her smile like a summer's dawn
that stole my heart away, that soft summer's day
    	in the valley near Slievenamon.

In the festive hall, near the star washed shoal,
Oh, peril, my restless spirit cries.
My love, oh my love, will I ne'er see you call,
and my land will you never apprise?

By night and by day, I ever, ever pray
but, lonely, my life goes on
to see our flag unroll, and my true love to enfold,
    	in the valley near Slievenamon.

    	In the valley near Slievenamon.
