TIPPERARY STAR - SEPTEMBER 9th 1989
Front Page Headlines.....
1. Tipperary Men Brush With Death in Israel.
Two Tipperary delegates on a fact finding mission in the Israeli
occupied West Bank had a close brush with death in the mainly Arab town
of Ramallah, fifteen miles north west of Jerusalem, on Wednseday last
as Israeli soldiers opened fire just as the Irish group arrived in the
town.
The delegation was led by Labour T.D. Mr Michael Ferris, of Bansha
a member of the Parliamentary Association for Euro-Arab CO-operation,
and included Dean David Woodworth of Cashel. The group were on their
third day in the West Bank when they came face to face with what the
Palestinian people maintain is the continual intimidation and
harassment being meted to them by Israeli troops.
2. Cattle Killed at Cappawhite.
A Cappawhite farmer and his teenage daughter had a miraculous escape
when an electrical fault in the farmyard killed six of their cows. Mr
Thomas McGrath, Cappagh, Cappawhite, and his thirteen year old
daughter, Rita, were bringing the cows in to be milked when the
electrical fault was discovered. Thankfully both Mr McGrath and his
daughter escaped unhurt but six of his cowns were electrocuted. The
rest of the herd fortunately survived.
3. Neighbours' Generosity Sends Martin to Lourdes.
The generosity and support of the people of Gortnahoe has enabled a
local 31 year-old married man who was recently diagnosed as having
cancer, to travel on pilgrimage to Lourdes this week with his wife.
Martin Skehan, Fennor, Gortnahoe, a self employed carpenter, was
diagnosed as having cancer two mmonths ago and is receiving ongoing
treatment in the Regional Hospital, Cork. His tremendous courage and
determination to make a full recovery have proved to be a tremendous
inspiration to the people in the area.
The people of Fennor and Gortnahoe have themselves proved to be an
inspiration to the Skehan family. They have provided incredible support
and encouragement to Martin and his wife, Kay and their three young
children.
Friends and neighbours organised a Lourdes fund to enable Martin
and his wife to visit Lourdes. A fund-raising dance was held in the
Anner Hotel (Thurles) on August 13th and the Hotel and Band, Tom and
the Rangers, all gave their services free of charge. The dance proved
to be an outstanding success and the level of support it attracted
outweighed all expectations.
4. Nenagh Firm in Receivership.
After ceasing operations just a little over a week ago, Esmere, the
Nenagh-based jewellery manufacturing company has gone into receivership
despite the company's claims earlier in the week the work had only
ceased to allow a review to be carried out. "the Tipperary Star"
learned on Wednesday however, that a possible buyer for the firm seems
likely to come in with a bid within a matter of days.

SIGNPOST OF LIFE.
Devil's Bit of Slieve Bloom range
Not far from Templemore
A concrete cross erected there
Marian year of fifty-four
Towering to the skies
This symbol of our faith
Take courage all you people
Prepare, it's not too late
A glow of light from the cross now shines
O're the countryside
A light to guide us homeward
Across the great divide
Gaze upon the cross each day
Don't have any fear
Signpost of our destiny
Our God, He's always near

COUNTY FINAL VICTORS ----- Pride of place this week must go to our
under sixteen footballers who on Friday night last, capyured the under
