what I saw in Ireland was that they'll pour several pints at a time.
The first pour is 15% Guinness, 85% creamy foam. They set them off to
the side for a few minutes until the foam has subsided to some extent.
Then they pour in some more and there's less foam and more stout. I
guess it takes 3-8 pours before it's complete.
There's two numbers I'm not sure about - how many pours? how long
between each one.

P.S. In Texas - it's one big pour just like it's another US beer!
Then the bartender wonders why I give him a strange look and ask him if
the Guinness Rep. has given him any pouring lessons!!

| Why bother pouring Guinness atall.
In Glasgow Guinness has in a lot of cases been replaced by Murphy's.
This is a consequence of Guinness buying over an old Scottish company
called D.C.L., distillars of whiskeys such as Teachers,and then
proceeding to crap all over their employees and renage on promises
to the Scottish Office and people.
This upset Glaswegians, so they retaliated the only way they could,they
stopped buying Guinness.
But being good Celts they had to drink something,so Murphy's stepped
in to fill the gap.
To my rather ravaged taste buds,too much Bushmills and Indian
takeaways, Murphy's is a far smoother pint.
The best place to sup a pint or ten of Murphy's in Glasgow is a
place called the Riverside Club.
It has an old fashioned atmosphere,good Scottish and Irish music
and lots of wild and energetic dancing.
If you're ever in this neck of the woods give it a try any Friday
or Saturday night,you won't be disappointed.

Glad to hear you frequent the 'Riverside', next time your there
tell Ci (the owner) that 'Big Robin - from Cork' was asking for
him. I used to go there all the time when it first opened. Do you
also then know his previous establishment, the 'Dunrobin', used
to be in George st., but was knocked down a few years back ?? A
great old pub with great beer and not short of character or characters.
This this mean you also frequent the 'Vikki' doon the road ??? If
so then I must have crossed your path at some stage.
To get back on track. It doesn't matter how you pour from a bottle
as it'll taste the same anyway but if you go too fast then you'll
be left with a head that's too big. As to pouring from taps then
if it's not in Ireland it doesn't matter as much as the stout for
export is not the same as that sold on the home market.
I'm sure one of the 3 musketeers will vouch for that..........
They've just opened a second Irish pub in Munich, with the dreadful
name of 'Shamrock' (I thought only Ammies had names like that !!)
but they serve a nice Guinness and Smithwicks.

Where is this new place the "Shamrock"..I suppose it has to be
"Tested". Ive never heard of anyplace here selling Smithwicks before,
though ..as you probably know..It would be hard for it to compete
with the local lagers around here..As for the way the pour Guinness
over here..Its an insult to a glass.

Its in a street called "Trautenwolf str." (trout-and-wolf!!). Its
far bigger than the other Irish pub with a more Irish clientele
and staff !! Also, music most nights and it's got late night extensions
(until 2:00 am I think) during the 'fest. They have however retained
that annoying habit that the other place has (i.e. pay as you drink!!)
which is not the norm as you know. Most places you pay as you leave
(very honest the Germans !!).
I tried to draw a map but it didn't work. However it's 2 streets
up from Giseletrasse (the U-bahn stop for the old-Irish pub)
on the same side of the road heading out of town.

| OK, you piqued my German curiousity.
Where was I in Munich last year? I was at this small (narrow) Irish
pub, kind of L-shaped. There were mostly Germans there (and a few
Irish that worked at BMW). There was an electronic dart board right
to the left as you entered. And there was enough Irish paraphenalia
floating on the walls and on the ceilings to stock another Shannon
duty free shop. It was in a relatively nice section of town a couple
of streets from some U-bahn stop.
Anybody have any ideas?

That was/is the "Irish Folk Pub", until recently the only Irishy
pub in Munich (although Mick might claim Jolly's is Irish !!!).
Its owners are German and their only claim to having any connection to
the Emerald Isle is that the wife worked for Aer Lingus in Germany for
2 years !!!. The owner is a bit of a nutter, with a drink on him,
and has been known to assault his clients when the mood takes him.
Also singing or generally having a good time is frowned upon. That's
why it's mostly Germans that go there !! But they've been there
for 12 years and I must admit to having had some good nights there.
Now we have a second one, not far away from where you were (5 mins),
owned and run by legit Irish.

Thats the "old Irish pub" in the Swabing area..just off Gieslestrase.
Your right in the description..It has mostly Germans in there as
it can be "quiet" for some people...Ive known a few Irish people
to be "barred" for making too much noise......The pub is in a
residential area so the locals were complaining a wee bit. Furthur
out a bit is the Harmonica bar where a number of Irish "live".
It has turned to serving Irish stew! at the moment..desperate stuff.
Very sound bar man..throws in an extra round now and again if he
sees your on a session..will play irish music if you ask.

I don't know how to say this but I have a sneaking suspicion that
I'm not quite as long in the tooth as you.
But enough of this gay wit and repartee lets discuss important things
like bevy and more bevy.
Tell me cus.when do you think you'll be back in the Holy City,we
should get together to quaff an ale or ten.
As for the Riverside rest easy it,unlike the rest of Glasgow, hasn't
changed a bit,the beer is still beautifull and the girls even more
so,the jigging is still as energetic and the bands are top notch.
Doesn't it make you want to come back to Mungo's Dear Green Place?

The Harmonica is definatly work checking out. Even though it's
not an Irish pub it has a good atmosphere and the clientel are
friendly, but playing pool there (there is a pool table in the
pub) can be detremental to your health! They have some crazy rules.
Although Mick "the Hussler" Keyes fairly wiped the table with a few
of them last time we were there! Even had a go at arm wrestling after
that.
Unfortunately they do not serve Guinness there (draft anyway,
they may have it in bottles, I'm not sure).

Hi there Robbie - after 3 1/2 years in Munich, I've returned to
Ayr (stupid time to leave - just before the 'fest', but there
ye go - when you got to go, you got to go ).
Re. the "Shamrock" - usually notes are pretty quick, but not this
time - I first heard of this place from one of my sons !. It
seems that this place has become very well known in a very short
time.

Well thats it...I suppose it has to be tested and tryed..Theres a
few people going up to Munich from here next Wednesday..Beerfest
first..and maybe the Rangers slaughter (Football match for those
who dont know)....afterwards...
Cathal "Christ wheres the back door" Copas..will be drawing up
a few "plans" "routes" for the session.
Theres also an Irish pub near landsberg..about 40 miles south of
Munich..which is ok...Jollies isn't that bad either in Munich.Robbie??

Gettin back on the topic, I know when I used to work in a pub
many years back that the Guinness taps were such that you pulled
the tap towards you for the first pour and filled the glass about
75% full.Then you let it sit, and then put the tap in the opposite
direction for the head and let it sit.In pouring the black stuff
you make sure to hold the glass at an angle such that it pours down
the side of the glass (the inside of course).
Having said that I was recently working in my brothers pub in Dundalk,
and was surprised to see that the taps are one way only now. Technology
has taken over. The secret in a good pint is having the barrels
of Guinness under the bar,which provides for a short run to the
taps and in keeping the pipes flushed clean.
I am in the infortunate position of having to go to Guinness next
week for a few weeks consultancy. Woe is me, Can I handle it???

| A point of information for all you thirsty Guinness fans:
After 3 years of "test marketing" Draught Guinness in cans in
three select markets in the U.S. (Washington, DC, S.F. Bay area, and
Detroit, (I think)), Guinness finally has their act together and
will be going national with the product in July. (It's about time!)
Guinness importer claims they will be introducing it to all U.S.
markets (including New England) in July.
Of course, the best stout anywhere can only be had in CORK -
Murphy's real Irish stout. ;^>

the Liffey!
And may I remind you of the late, lamented Brendan Behan's comment

| Well now, Van was brilliant! In great form. 2 1/2 hour show. Band
consistin of horns 3(trumpet,sax,soprano sax), Guitar, Keybords, Bass,
Drums, Purcussion, and "The Man" himself. Ran through the begining of
the set with not so familliar tunes,(read, not a greatest hits
set).
Next hour started with two songs from his 'Irish Heartbeat'
recorded with the Cheiftans, 'My Lagan Love' and 'Star of the County
Down'. Then he reached back and kicked a** with G-L-O-R-I-A! Invited
Bono on stage to help with this one. The crowd went nuts.
T'was a full moon so 'Moon Dance' with a touch of 'My
Funny Valentine'thrown in was cranked through. Four encores later gave
his "tribute to Bob Dylan" with 'Its All Over Now Baby Blue'.
For this he brought on stage, Chrissie Hynde, Bono, Elvis
Costello,Kris Kristofferson, Stevie Winwood, and of course Bob Dylan.
Chrissie helped out on vocals, Bob mostly on harmonica, Stevie W. gave a
great solo on organ, Bono on vocals......what a finale!
Seats were good, sound was great, big venue, sorta like the
Centrum. Mixed crowd, young and old. Murphy's wasn't half bad actually.
Any port in a storm, I suppose.;-) 2.50 a pint though. Back to Jury's
after the show for the REAL THING!

| Another point of info for you thirsty Guinness fans in Mass.:
I was in my favourite beverege emporium on Saturday (in Mass.)
and there it was: Genuine Guinness pub draught in a can. 4-pak
for $5.95
According to the owner, he's had it for sale, for about three weeks now.
I had to buy several 4-paks to sample it. And I must say, not bad...
for Liffey water. ;^>
