640.0. "Irl licence --> UK -->Irl " by CURRNT::QUINN () Fri Sep 08 1989 11:04

    I live in the UK and a friend of mine wishes to swap her Irish driving
    licence for a UK one(has lived here for more than 12 months so must
    transfer). She plans to go home again someday(le cabhair De) but
    does not want to have to do 'the test' again at home. If she gets
    a UK licence can it be swapped again for an Irish license in a few
    years from now.

    Up to now I've been getting conflicting answers from various people
    so if any of you know the rules for definite I would appreciate
    your replies.

    She can get a UK license and this is transferrable with an IRL one.
    However if she has been in the UK for more than a year then she will
    have to sit the UK driving test. The trick is to say that you are here
    less than the 12 months.

    All European licenses are transferrable.

    Yes, I've already swapped my Irish for a UK and am in the process
    for swapping for a German one. By the way I had an indorsement on
    my Irish one which didn't follow me to the UK when I transferred.
