Well, I promised this terrific Irishman I'd post this for the cause.
I don't mean to sound facetious, because I support the passage of the
Kennedy-Simpson immigration bill. And I hope, if you agree, that you'll
write to your representatives in the House to urge them to support it,
also.

The Kennedy-Simpson bill, according to what I've read, passed the Senate,
and will be up for vote in the House. Unfortunately, I don't know the
bill number. What I *do* know, however, is that it tries to correct
some of the injustices of America's present immigration policies. In 1986
the Phillipines received 56,000 work visas; Ireland received 400. The
US grants work visas primarily on the basis of political persecution and
reunification of families. For a nation who prides itself on equality,
there is nothing equitable about this.

The Kennedy-Simpson bill allows a *very* small percentage of the yearly US
immigration visas to be designated as "merit visas." (For example, 55,000
out of 600,000). These would be based on job skills and education.
Need I say more.

Please take a minute to contact your federal representative in Washington.
BTW, my information came from THE IRISH TIMES, in an article written by
Niall O'Dowd, publisher of THE IRISH VOICE in New York.

Thanks --
Stacey Martin
