    Gerry,

If you're going to be in Ballina area I would recommend climbing
Croagh Patrick. This is a holy mountain in Westport - not too far
from Ballina - affords a spectacular view. You don't have to do
    it barefoot either. ;-)

Second I'd drive around Achill Island and Belmullet area in west Mayo
    - again some superb scenery - also you'd be travelling in a "Gaeltacht"
which makes it a bit more interesting.

    Have a great holiday,
    -george

    Gerry,

If you're into history you might want ot follow the route of
General Humbert to Croagh Patrick. The French Army landed at Killala
in 1798, took Ballina and headed through Crossmolina and Lahardane
(My Dad's hometown) and together with a contingent of local recruits
(They had no trouble in finding volunteers!), they routed the Brits
    at Castlebar.

Beyond Crossmolina to the West (if you head towards Belmullet)
are some of the most extensive peat bogs I've seen in Ireland.

If you're religioius, Knock Shrine is not far from Croagh Patrick
(where St. Patrick is said to have fasted for 40 days). If you're
into climbing hills, you could try Nephin. I hear the fishing is
good in Loch Conn but I wouldn't want to get involved in the
    fishing-license controversy.

As George says, Achill is probably you're best bet for scenery,
also the area around Louisburg and going towards Lenane in Galway.

Ballina is the hometown of Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan
of whom the song "Take me home to Mayo" was written.

It's a great place. The people are wonderful. I'm sure you'll
    have a great time.

    Beir bua,
    Dick

If u fancy breaking the piggy bank open you could always head for Ashford
Castle, food there is excellent, but be prepared to run when the
    bill appears.
Software services had the luxury of staying in the Downhill Hotel
Ballina last year for a weekend (or was it the year before) and the
food there was very good and I think reasonably priced.
There is no shortage of excellent watering holes in the area.

    regards peter.

We went to Louiseborough last year and I'd recommend the whole area.
We took the car around and alongside Killala bay - a fantastic journey
with lakes inlets and mountains all around. The Old Head Hotel
near Loiuseborough does good food and there is an approved camping
    site on the grounds.

Also worth a visit is Clare island. A halfhourish trip will take
you across. I think it was the nearest sensation I got to rodeo
riding on the day we went...huuuuuuuuuuuuugggggieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    but well worth it !

For your information Frank Stagg is not from Ballina, Rather
    Hollymount.
