| I'm not sure of the cost, but when I was there 2 years ago having
my DEC ID Badge saved me a substantial off the daily rental price.
It's worth looking into. Also if you are looking for B&B I can give
you my mothers Phone # and Address as she runs a business there
( in Galway).
Rgds,
Gerry.

I believe the discount only works with Avis or Hertz.

You can explicitly waive the insurance fees if you pay with American
Express. American Express has an insurance policy that will cover
accidents. Insurance fees run about US$8 per day.

I think those sort of credit card waiver deals are usually restricted
to car rentals within the US.
re .0
When I was in Ireland last year, the cheapest deal was to take
up Aer Lingus' Fly Drive arrangement - I paid around half of Avis'
rate doing that - 99 sterling ($160) for a week, paid in advance,
for a Ford Fiesta-sized car. (CDW, PAI was extra, about 35 punts).
The Avis deal, even with DEC discount, would have been considerably
more.
You might check to see if your airline has such an arrangement. It
worked out far cheaper to fly Aer Lingus for us because of this,
even though several of the other airlines offered cheaper flights.

619.5 | Try DEC'S leasing Co | DUB01::BRENNAN_M | Take that look off your face | Fri Jul 28 1989 14:23 | 6 |
| It may be worth investigating O'Mearas Car Hire at Shannon. The
are the leasing company for Digital. I do not know whether they
give discount rates for DEC employees. However I would be surprised
if they dont.

Not so, I personally have waived insurance fees in Ireland, twice
to be exact, by paying with American Express. Saved at least US$60
per week. In fact, many other credit/charge card companies are now
offering similar deals, i.e. Mastercard, in order to attract more
clients.

Anyone can waive the insurance fees, and take the risk of having
no CDW/PAI, whether or not their card otherwise covers them. I know
I've looked at a couple of credit cards that in the small print
restrict this to "US rentals only" (presumably because car insurance
laws are different all over the world?)
Maybe AmEx covers internationally.
Check the small print, I guess!

I asked the question.
American Express backs you up on the insurance issue, George.

Julia,
You won't want to hear about it. I'm going home to Galway to
take care of my very ill mother for 3 weeks. I will be lucky if I
see Eyre Square (center of Galway) once, not to mention any of
my fellow noters in the Galway facility. However, I think
Galway is an excellent place to spend a holiday. It has a
very civilized atmosphere and is full of European tourists
in summer. It also has great access to one of the Gaelteacth
areas. And then it has that true national treasure: all those
hospitable DECers in GAO to extend the 100,000 wlecomes to you!

| Eileen -
I recently received a whole bunch of brochures from the Irish Tourist
Board as I am also going to Ireland in September. I'd be happy
to send you the brochures/information on car rentals if you want to
have a look. Send me mail or DTN: 264-1531.
Best wishes to your Mom.
