613.0. "Seek Help Tracing Ancestor-County Londonderry" by RIGAZI::SPERANDIO () Tue Jul 18 1989 12:41

I would like to trace an ancestor. I need advice on how to proceed.
Can any NOTERS help point me towards a source of more info? Got any advice or
comments? Sure would appreciate some input.
Thanks.
--- Richard

I know he was from the Colerain area, County Londonderry, and that he left
brothers behind when he came to The United States.
Could the family still be in the area? Is there a phone directory or way to
check tax records? Or is this a war zone and restricted area?

The information I have is as follows:
My maternal great-great-great-great grandfather was Michael McElhiney.
b.
m. 04/21/1795 to Cassandra Maria Jones in Baltimore, MD.
d. 04/27/1815 at his home "BellAire", Hartford Co., MD

His will was probated in 1815 and mentions brothers in Ireland.
His son was named William James, two others died in infancy.

I found a parchment in the family files naming him a
       Master Mason, Lodge 235
       Colerain, County Londonderry
       Kingdom Of Ireland
This document is dated 09/13/1787.

Any idea how to check if the Masons have records?

The map shows this to be in Ulster, Northern Ireland where the war is going on.
What do I need to know about that situation?

If you haven't already done so, it would be good to post this on the Genealogy
conference, VIXVAX::GENEALOGY, as this is the kind of thing that you can get
a fair amount of advice on there.

By the way, note the correct spelling of "genealogy", as many people mispell it.

It's interesting that you refer to the "troubles" in N.I. as "THE
    WAR".

I'm just curious as to where you're located and what you hear about
the "troubles" in N.I. so as to cause you to refer to it as "THE
    WAR".

Is it possible that the U.S. is not the only country to get "not
quite get all the facts"!!! ;-)

re:.2

Well, I am located in St. Louis. MO. Where are you? I get my news mainly from
the New York Times. Sometimes, the DEC VOLGON News Service, Canada, and Radio
Havana when I can. I find foreign news reporting to often have a different
slant than US news. I sometimes find this refreshing. Usually, it gives you a
better perspective on things.

Prior to my recent discovery (re:.0), I did not know just where in Ireland my
ancestor hailed from. I was surprised when it turned out to be in the North. I
am afraid that I have a low political awareness about the situation there, as do
most Americans (probably due to the Thatcher/Reagan-Bush govmt.alliance).
I will now be investigating the scene more closely.

Why do you call it "troubles"? I'd like to know more.

Isn't it properly called a "War" when one government has occuppied another's
territory, when there are no jobs, when innocent people are both imprisoned and
killed in the streets of their own neighborhoods, and when the conflict has been going
on for 10+ (200?) years with no relief in sight?

613.5What's in a Word!AUSTIN::OREILLYEire in '90 or '91Wed Jul 19 1989 20:0439
    Hi Richard,

    I'm in Austin, Texas.

I agree with what you're saying - For some reason it caught my
attention to see it stated "war". I could see why it can be called
    that.

On the other hand, from what I understand and with no actual data
in hand - more people die from auto accidents in NI than in actions
    realting to the "war".

With regard to use of "troubles" - when my wife and I were in Rep.
of Ireland the poeple would refer to the "Troubles"- meaning - of
course the continuing conflict, bombings, shootings etc. that are
going on up there as well as the discrimination etc.

I agree we do get a poor view of the rest of the world sometimes.
It's interesting how the US television concentrates so much on what
the anchors look like and sound as opposed to what comes out of
their mouths! Also, the "joking" or "added entertainment" you see
as opposed to in Europe - they tell the news period - in depth.

My wife and I are coming through St. Louis on the way to North Carolina
on Aug.11 and have a 3.5 hour layover - any suggestions? Can we
get to the arch on a bus and back from there? It's on a Friday
from 10 am to 1:30 pm.

Also, we'll be in St. Louis for three days for a wedding (my wife's
brother a Notre Dame grad marrying a Notre Dame Masters Degree Grad!
    - both with heavy Irish blood). We'll be right in the heart of
downtown where there's been a lot of renovation as I understand.
Any recommendations where a good pint of Guinness can be found (in
the heart of Anheuser-Busch Country!!) We'll be there Friday night
Sept 1 to Sunday Sept. 3 early evening.

    Thanks,

Howdy, JO'R!

How is that pronounced?
I always thought that Austin would be a neat place to live considering the local
music scene. Interesting reply on use of "troubles" and the Euro news. I wish
the US news would go back to just news, but it won't. Are those auto accidents
you mention the ones with the car-bombs? Somehow I have the impression that
N.I. is a pretty grim place. From your rapid response thought you might be
political about Ireland. Look forward to hearing your 1st hand account sometime.

I'd like to be able show you around St. Louis, but I too am headed to the
Carolinas (8/10-8/19). A week on the beach!

August is pretty humid here and the airport is not centrally located.
The Arch is about 1/2 hour one-way drive from the airport. There might be a
direct bus from downtown-airport. Am not sure. A cab would be possible for a
quick (and expensive) trip to see it, but you may not have enough time then.
(If you're flying TWA you can plan on being an hour late.) There is a museum
underground and you can ride up inside the Arch for a keen lookout over the
city. You could easily spend 2-3 hours there. Sometimes a long line waiting to
go up, so you might want to save that for your Sept. visit.

I should be back in town then. Maybe we could meet then for a cold Guinness or
Harp? There's a great Irish pub here called McGurk's which features live Irish
entertainment 7 nights a week.

When staying downtown, be sure and ask for a room with a view of the river.
I'll try to post an up-to-the-minute note on Things To Do right before your
Aug. 11 trip.

Yes, Austin is a great place with a great music scene.

JO'R is just a nickname as it became a way of initialing papers
    - My father, also Richard (Carroll) used RO'R. Folks call me John
although I let my wife use "Jorrie and Jorface".

No I'm not political and regarding NI I am just saddened by it and
would like to see it resolved. By the exchanges I've seen both
in this confrence and especially in Euro_forum (which I don't read
any more) there's not a lot of hope to resolve the situation.

No, I truly meant regular auto accident deaths versus deaths by
WAR and not including "regular murder" (sounds a bit strange doesn't
    it).

We'll probably just bring some good books on our Carolina St Louis
layover. I'm always about missing a flight although maybe I should
getting nervous after I get on it from now on!

Is the place you mentioned downtown?

    See ya,

Northern Ireland, like the rest of Ireland is very pretty on the
whole. Unlike other pretty parts of the UK/Ireland, it is also
remarkably free of people (tourists being scared to visit).
In most parts of the province, you wouldn't even know 'the
troubles' existed. The only real hint I had of 'the troubles'
(outside of central Belfast and Derry) when I was there last year
was an RUC roadblock/random check in rural Co. Antrim - I was driving
a car with Cork plates, so naturally got randomly stopped! (The poor
constable looked so confused when I spoke with an English accent and
    handed him a British licence...)

St. Louis Airport Must-DO's
- pose under the model of "The Spirit Of St. Louis" hanging in East Concourse.
- get a shoe-shine on lower level. Ask Sammy for a "Lincoln" (it's not on the
sign) and be amazed at the shine-of-your-life ($5).
- sneak up from behind and pinch a Hare Krisna.
- ride backwards with no hands on the moving walkways in East Concourse.
- look for Walter Cronkite.
- buy more flight insurance and send policies to your friends.
- practice rebel yell in the bathroom.
- hunt for unmarked doors to luxury passenger lounges (just walk right in and
make yourself at home- the TWA Ambasador Club has computer terminals...).
- check the "You Are Here" maps for accuracy.
- get free Junior Pilot's wings from any stewardess.
- go to the International Wing and practice your foreign accent(s) on the clerk.
- have yourself paged on the loudspeaker.
- ride the wheelchairs down the ramp (S-curve!) to the West Concourse.
- practice your fake limp.
