Maybe it's a stupid question (please confirm it's not...), but I thought that maybe someone with a CELT-knowledge could give me some information about my name. It was always a prblem for me in the very early times back in school if we had as homework the origin and meaning of our own name, I never could do it (nor the teacher...) So, clear up my obsession and tell, suggest or hint me about the name ROBBENS. Regards, Luc.

In the South West Scotland Phone directory there are no Robbens listed. There are 5 Robbins's, a few Robbie's and loads of Robb's. My guess is the Robbens is either a derivative of Robbins or Ruebens ?!? Don H.

Theres a Roben in the Irish directary but thats the closest. I would say its a derivative of a Scottish name. Regards Stephen p.s. I'm new to the conference but if anyone wants a few tips for Galway Races give me a buzz 7822-2337

Your grandfather was probably a Belgian postman who was caught opening the mail and had to flee the posse, made it to England, went north to Scotland, checked the telephone book, changed his name from Rubens to Robbens, sly devil, took the ferry to Ireland, moved to Ballyvaughan, realised there was already a postie on the run hiding out there, moved on and here you are. Murphy, who knows where he's from.

Ya might try VIXVAX::GENEALOGY, or send mail to its moderator, Vic Bennison. He's a wiz at backgrounds of Scottish names, and probably can identify a fair amount of Irish ones... Randy |
