597.0. "Ahmmm, what about fishing?" by SX4GTO::BERNARD (Dave from Cleveland) Fri Jun 16 1989 20:28

Suppose someone wants to visit Eire and also likes to wet a hook
now and then. Is it worthwhile bringing tackle along on the visit?

Sometimes rumor has it that access to the decent trout streams in that
part of the world are in private hands, and that an ordinary mortal would
have a difficult and expensive time getting access, especially if he'd only
have a few days in which to do so. True or false?

Can folks fish the Shannon? What sort of beasties live there?
Atlantic salmon? Do they respond to flies?

And most importantly- more important even than whether the waters are
inhabited- what are the rules? Short term license fees for alien visitors-
expensive or cheap or free? Permissions- simple or byzantine?

In short, should a visitor pack a little tackle, or just an extra
camera instead? Do you guys in Galway fish, or just frequent the pubs,
    or what?

    Good evening.

There are fish in the Shannon, and I've caught a few. One
grew with each pint till even I didn't believe it. If you're
in Carrick-on-Shannon, look up Leo Mulvey and tell him you
    want to catch a pike.

Not to mention the rod license dispute that's still going on.
I'm sure Errol will have a bit to say about that.

Lough Corrib in Galway is always good fishing, with salmon, trout and
pike the most common. I heard a few weeks back that the salmon were
spawning. Again though look into the rod license disputes.

Bringing your own gear would make the most sense and just pick up
    local lures and bait.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Hi,
    	Fly fishing eh!

Well the Suir is pretty good for trout (esp) and salmon
so you could caste a line in the Plains of Tipperary.
Liamie Farrell in Cahir is one of the best fly-fishermen
in the country and is something to do with the local
    	angling club....

My brother-in-law is over there at the moment fishing so
the Rod License dispute must have abated somewhat in
    	Munster at any rate....

They say the Blackwater in Cork is good as well but sure ya
could"nt believe a word dat dem Corkies tell ya!
