583.0. "General Election Called" by REFINE::FARRELL (The Hacker. DTN 235-8164) Thu May 25 1989 16:05

For those of a political persuasion (or are there any of these in this
notes file ? :->), a General Election has been called in Ireland.

No, this is NOT where they replace the military junta, it's where
they replace the current minority government with another one.

The crack should be mighty for the next few weeks.

The 23rd Dail (Parliament) lasted 2 years and two months. With the
active support of the main opposition party, the government has been
able to bring about some improvements in the Irish economy in that
    time.
Now Fianna Fail (under Charles Haughey) are seeking an overall
parliamentry majority.Opinion polls seem to suggest he can do it,
but anything can happen in three weeks.Yes,the crack will indeed
    be mighty.

...Can anybody tell us the story about overseas people voting? Is
it possible for either of the European or National elections. I
understand there is some method of postal voting but I'm not
    sure what the story is.

583.5Don`t Vote ...It Encourages them!!KIRKTN::KCASEYMon May 29 1989 09:005
Fianna Fail always go stark raving mad as far as anyone with any
cop on can see. I wonder if they are going to abolish the PAYE system
to bribe the country to vote for them this time.

did ya say Tony Gregory mister?Well let me tell ya he was the most
selfish wanK@$ that ever came into the Dail. All he wanted was money
and more money for the Dubs and to hell with the rest of the country.
I hope that there is a hung Dail because this will keep a rein on
old Charlie, then again maybe he will make some other stupid conscessions
to other selfish wank@$s like the above named. The country needs
good politicans not greedy and selfish ones.

No seems to have managed to get the FF'ers to answer this one in public
so I ask it here in the hope of 'enlightenment'. Incidentally, it used
to be said in Dublin that voting Fianna Fil was a bit like w*@king -
everyone did it, but few admitted to doing it. Back to my question, in
the last election campaign the FF posters stated:

"Health cuts hit the weak, the old and the sick!"

No one would argue with that. Given their subsequent performance in
government, did they intend to say:

"Health cuts hit the weak, the old and the sick, but who
    		cares!"

If what they said on their posters last time out was an untruth, how
can we trust what they say on the current batch?

Pat [who has never admitted anything :-) ]

Re. -8

    > "Health cuts hit the weak, the old and the sick,

	You could add :

"...unless you're the Tainste in which case health cuts
don't effect you 'cause you can fly to the States and pay $1m
	for a liver transplant."

	N.B.
I'm NOT against private treatment but if you're partly responsible
for the health system (cabinet collective responsibility etc)
you should use it. If you don't consider it good enought for you
don't expect it to be good enought for taxpayers.

	You can't !

	Beware of them !
