The last issue of the Irish Emigrant contained
information about a new Irish Language bulletin
board operated out of University College Dublin.
It also contained instructions about how to
subscribe to this bulletin-board. Those instructions
were wrong (through no fault, it should be added, of 
the people who put the Emigrant together, but rather
because of a misunderstanding that happened somewhere 
between Dublin and California).
 
This is how it should actually be done:
 
Send a Mail message to [email protected] (from BITNET)
                 or to [email protected] (from INTERNET)
                 or to [email protected]   (from JANET)
 
(NOTE:  *Do not* send mail to GAELIC-L. What happens then is
that your message is simply distributed to the mailboxes of
everyone who has subscribed.)
 
In the mail message, put the following:
 
     SUBSCRIBE GAELIC-L user@site
 
This is supposed to work. Sorry for all the confusion.

    	For those of you who are interested in the general 'gist' of
    	.5, what hes asking is for some opinions on an Irish Word to
    	describe a conference (or mail list, discussion list, bulletin
    	board etc)
    
    	He came up with the word "CO-LABHAIRT", Marion came up with
        "LIOSTA COMHR�" or "GR�AS�N", he prefers the latter.
    
    	Im not familiar with GR�S�N, and LIOSTA COMHR� is a bit too
    	'literal' I think ... wonder if there are any NEW words being invented
    	in Irish for 'technical' use - most likely not!

    I haven't had the time to figure out how I enter answers in the
    bulletin board but seems to me that "r�iteas" is a perfectly good
    word (well according to de Bhaldaire) without having to invent new
    ones.

GAELIC-L is a list set up for people with an interest in the Gaelic languages
[Scottish and Irish, with Irish being the majority at present].  It is a
listserver list, all mail goes to all subscribers and it is set up so that
replies are broadcast too.  There are a lot of learners on the list, so
people who post in Gaelic usually provide a translation;  also, some items
are posted specifically to provide reading material for learners, and the
posters attach vocabulary lists to them.  
 
To subscribe to the list, send a mail message to 
decwrl::"[email protected]" containg the single line

SUB GAELIC-L your name

eg. SUB GAELIC-L Craig Cockburn
 
To send a message to everyone on the list, send it to 
decwrl::"[email protected]"
 
To reply to a message on the list, broadcasting to everyone, use the normal
reply facility of your mailer;  to reply to sender only, use the restricted 
reply facility of your mailer (if your mailer is like mine, these are the
R and r commands respectively). (I think this is referring to Unix mail- CC)
 
To quit the list, if you've decided you don't like it after joining it,
send a one-line message to decwrl::"[email protected]"
SIGNOFF GAELIC-L
 
A log is maintained of all messages that have been sent to the list, one
log file for each calendar month.  Other files can be associated with the list.
There are listserv commands (sent as mail messages) to get a list of the
files available and to get individual files (these are sent back to you as
mail messages) so you can get hold of ancient (well, not quite ancient; the
list has only be going for about 15 months) messages if you want to.  Send
a one line message HELP to decwrl::"[email protected]" if you want to 
find out about these facilities.
 
I hope you will join the list; we could do with some more people to redress
the balance between Irish and Scots!
