529.0. "Bearna Boaghail" by VLS6::CARBERRY () Wed Mar 15 1989 11:40

			Bearna Boaghail

As a member of the choir of St. Patrick's church in Lawrence, Massachusetts,
we are called upon to sing the Irish National Anthem (Soldiers of Erin) on
two occasions each year. The first is our annual "St. Patrick's Mass" in
honor of our parish's patron saint, and the second is our annual Mass in
memory of departed members of the Local Chapter of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians.

In the refrain of this song, there is the line:

"Tonight we man the Bearna Boaghail..."

I'm embarassed to admit that I do not know the English translation of
"Bearna Boaghail", in fact I'm not really sure of the correct pronunciation.

Can someone shed some light upon this for me?

		Thanks, Fred

Fred: You might also want to look at note 196.*

It does not answer your question exactly, but it might
give you a little more info. I am certain that once the
lads in Ireland see your note (different time-zone problem)
you will get a more accurate answer.

You're THAT Kevin Burns!!! What a small world. I'll tell Judy
that I've "spoken" with you. Im sure she remembers you. And
thanks for pointing me toward note 196.

By the way, you didn't happen to attend "St. Paddy's Mass" did you?
There's no guinness or stout, but the music is as authentic as you'll
find in any church this side of the Atlantic.

    	It's a long way from the "Drafting/Repro World" ...
Just mention Jim Cormier to Judy .... were both talking early 70's

I missed the Mass in Lawrence ..... I was out of State.

Do you know John Grainey from Woburn ??
He was the "Washington Trip Organizers" from Woburn.
    	He is my Uncle.

    john the taller,
Not only did I admit to knowing keVin, worse yet, my wife knows
    him.

keVin, I don't know your uncle. We were led by John Cronin from
North Andover. How did you know I was there?

529.6I bet that "Culbert Guy" is back here in no time.STEREO::BURNSa.k.a. 3rd DegreeWed Mar 15 1989 14:1720

FRED: That John Culbert is "Such a wize guy" that I had to use
the "Powers Vested in Me" and I "ZAPPED" his note :-)

I asked John to do the right thing, but seeing as his
"Shorter Brother" is away on business, he thinks he can
do what ever he wants ..... Paddy told me to watch out
for any dirty tricks that his brother might attempt. :-)

Anyway, Fred I know you were there because I saw you
and Judy on T.V. several times ...

My uncle seems to be spending an awfull lot of time in
    	      Brighton lately ...	;-)

The words mean "The Gap of Danger", poetically the "breech in the
wall" or the most dangerous part of a battle.
