519.0. "RANKLED BY ROYALTY" by FSADMN::REESE () Thu Mar 02 1989 17:32

If I understand an earlier note, we are supposed to stay away
from topics of political nature, but I couldn't resist this,
I got a good laugh out of it:

    Article inlcuded in NINNAU:

WALES TAKES BROOKLYN....A glittering night at the opera....

The article detailed the February 2nd opening performance of the
Welsh National Opera performing "Falstaff" at the Brooklyn Acad-
emy of Music. Although the article praised the performance by
the opera company, the entire thing was overshawdowed by the fact
that the Feb. 2nd performance would be attended by none other than
    HRH, the Princess of Wales.

Unfortunately, the article deteriorated into a description of
Princess Di's hair, clothes, etc. ho hum.......

    ********************************************************************

But then I turned the page to the section of letters to the editor,
    first one up:

    "To the editor:

I received an invitation to attend the Welsh National Opera
production of Verdi's Falstaff at the Brooklyn Academy of
Music. I am most annoyed at the association of English roy-
alty with this event. I can understand why they have to put
up with them over there, but I do not see why we have to have
them over here! I am proud to be Welsh and proud to be an
American (notice the order here folks), but English royalty
rankles both the Welsh and the American in me!!"

    				Sincerely,

I'll let the lady remain anonymous

I'll bet this lady doesn't buy People magazine when Princess Di
appears on the cover (usually once a year)! No one can say that
the Welsh don't speak their minds!

Hope ya'll find this as amusing as I did.

Well, I was amused by the adoration of Di. I wonder would the US be
interested in buying the Royal family? Maybe as a Disney-world
exhibit. However, a word of warning - I noted the furore over pay
raises in Congress and the Senate. You may be interested to know that
the Queen had a pay raise of $105,000 per WEEK this year. It's
    tough at the top.

    They have(or had) a Royal Family already...The Kennedys ;-)

Kennedys - American Royal Family........or royal pain? :-)

Colin, your comment about Disneyworld had me rolling on the
floor.......but why muck up Disneyworld? It's been said that
    Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker have some real estate up for grabs;
this way the royals could have their very own theme park! I
can see it now, the Tower of London turned into a water slide!

Probably the same folks that travel south to tour Graceland
would be more than happy to drive down the road a piece to
    visit their Royal Highnessesssssssssseses!

Getting a little rankled at the Kennedy bashing. Someone please
tell me what a family that has contributed so much to the country
and the world has done to deserve the snide remarks. At least they
spend their OWN money, unlike the aforementioned royalty.

    Re. .4 <Explain please>

Well, I really would hate to see what started out as a light-
hearted discussion of the Welsh National Opera Company go down
    a rat-hole over the Kennedys.

The idea of the Kennedys being considered the American equivalent
of royalty didn't originate in this file....I think the media
might have had something to do with it! For what it's worth,
I don't dislike the Kennedys, I'm just a little disturbed that
so many of the newer generation of that family seems to think
that somehow the Kennedy surname entitles them automatically to
    poltical office.

I very much admired the late Robert Kennedy, but I'm afraid I
don't have much use for Senator Ted. As someone who was born
and raised in Mary Jo Kopechne's home town and who was aware of
facts just recently confirmed in a book on that subject, I just
can't put him on the same pedestal as his late brothers.

And since you mentioned it first; I would have no objections
whatsoever to the Kennedys spending their OWN money on some
of the social programs they have favored...it's when Ted keeps
wanting to give away my money that I get upset! I don't think
a spending bill has ever been put before Congress that Ted
    Kennedy didn't like!

The loss of Jack and Ted were true tragedies, the likes of
    which I hope never to see this country go though again;
however I'll leave it up to the historians to decide the value
of what the remaining Kennedys have contributed to the country
    *and to the world*.

It was never my intent to *bash* the Kennedys as a whole; but
chalk it up to *my* personal character defects if you must, but
I find Ted Kennedy's hypocrisy to be absolutely galling! The
man has gotten away with things the likes of which you and I
would never have been allowed to get past the judicial system
    unscathed.

I've spoken my piece, it was never my intent to offend.
