517.0. "Noel Henry?" by WILLEE::OROURKE () Thu Mar 02 1989 13:44

    O.K. You cultural experts....Has anybody out there heard of Noel
    Henry's Irish Showband?

    I've been invited to an "event" this evening with the above mentioned
    as the entertainment.

    I've never heard of them...the name sounds a little "cutesy" though.

517.1Take me home to Mayo ..... :-)STEREO::BURNSCeltic ThunderThu Mar 02 1989 14:4720

    	Excellent Irish Group ...

    	They are all from Mayo. (Ballyhaunis)

    	Noel Henry himself may not be there .. he is suffering from
    	bone cancer in his hips, and I hear a few other entertainers
    	have joined the group in hopes of keeping up the good quailty.

        Paddy Culbert plans on having them play at his daughters wedding
    	(when ever that is)   :-)

517.2Noel Henry reviewWILLEE::OROURKEMon Mar 06 1989 13:1523

    Well KeVin,

    You were right, they were very good. Noel was not there, as you
    expected. They were very personable and had a good time with the
    crowd.

    The concert managed to raise over $5,000 for St. Michael's parish...not
    bad!

    The music was fun...they played for about 4 hours. I must say they
    pushed my Irish sensibilities though when they played such things
    as La Bamba and the Twist!

    One of the nicest songs was called Gay Garden (?). They tried to
    teach people a dance done in pairs around a circle with a
    forward/backward walking style. It was very pretty once people
    got the hang of it.

    Jen/,

      I am planning to have the band play at my daughters wedding.
    This event is still a long way off. 8*(

      She is in her first year of nursing school which I am praying will
    turn into Med. school the result being an M.D. after her name.

      Noel has a very good band as bands go. I hope they will be around
    when the time comes for the wedding.

517.4ok for a wedding except for 1 thing!WILLEE::OROURKEMon Mar 06 1989 16:4111

    Paddy,

    I think they would make a good 'wedding band', only there is one
    thing that I think your daughter would agree with:

    Have them ditch the tacky green blazer-white pants look for the
    occasion, unless your daughter is marrying a leprechaun!!!!

    	That sounds like a description of Rep. Culberts pajamas .. :-)
    	except that Paddy has little slippers sewn into his.

    If she has any sense she'll sympathise with, then ignore, your
    senility and hire a rock'n'roll band. Why do parents always attempt
    to have music at their childrens' weddings similar to what they had at
    theirs, eons ago?
    Not to mention the questionable state of mind of one who is planning
    his daughter's wedding music years before she's even thinking of
    getting married???
    Aren't parents just sooooo wonderful?????

    And the answer is not...."Well I'm paying for it"!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yours who believes Paddy to be quite capable of doing the Twist,
    if he had a couple to help overcome the self-consciousness.

    Murphy,

      Twist? I was thinking more on the line of the Stroll, Swim, Monkey
    and of course the Buge-a-Luge. What the hell is Rock and Roll?

      Then of course the Irish Wedding Song to be done in it's best
    form.

      And since I am stuck paying for this blessed event the bar will
    be open. And that will most likely be the single largest expence,
    especially if keVin and his crowd get invited. 8*)

    1. Burns.....pay attention to your class....we the shareholders
    are paying for this investment in you....

    2. That's more like it, Paddy, plenty of boogie woogie.....
    so forget Mr.Henry and his ilk.....and don't worry too much,
    keVin can't drink all that much.....he slows down after the first
    barrell.....

    	I had the misfortune to see noel henry at the Irish Fest in
    M'waukee (very good fest otherwise). This band is very popular among
    Irish Americans for a reason that I can't figure out.
    	I arrived to the stage that noel was playing at a little late
    as I was over at another stage to see De Dannann. When I got there
    they were doing their rendition of Yankee Doodle Dandy. They followed
    this up with the Drunken Sailor (see what I'm sayin). What is even
    more perplexing is that this band is shipped in from Boston to play
    at weddings in Chicago quite frequently.
    	I must have a poor ear for music,
    Tim.
