    I've heard various points of view expressed about this subject.
    Rather than going in to them, suffice to say that...'Guinness,
    unlike the Irish, doesn't travel very well'

    Guinness sold outside of Ireland is pasteurised, to make
    it last longer. It will *always* be different.

       I never had any complaints either, but then it could be that
    you don't miss what you've never had. THE FIRST THING I do when
    I finally DO get over there is make the comparison myself. They
    say you might have a three day wait while they're pouring it but
    just the froth is worth it. We'll see...we'll see.

       I go to Flemings ALL the time and the stout there tastes the
    same as it does everywhere else that serves it. Of course, the
    flavor can be different depending on MY state of mind at the time.

    	I have only been to Flemings once, ordered Harp rather than
        Guinness, but Guinness is rapidly becoming my favorite thanks
    	to Paddy Culbert. It's part of our "Training Plan" for our trip

       Yup. Been to O'Reilly's Daughters'a few times.  The food at Flemings
    is really good though.
    
       Where ya' going in Eire?  I was planning a trip in August but
    looking at the current state of finances it'll probably be put off

         We were discussing the price of tea in China, and the expected
         shortage of Kiwi fruit in the U.S. this summer.    :-)
    
         Our "Training Plan" consist of consuming vast amounts of Guinness
    	 on a semi-regular basis, so that we won't be mistaken for tourists
         i.e. "Yanks" when we are in Ireland. This process has been
         proven to work in the past (I think) ... and "practice makes perfect"
         I think we have the quantity problem solved, now if we could
    	 only consume them as quickly as "The Snake" ....   :-)

    Lads, ye can drink all the Guinness in the world between now and
    August, but ye'll still be yanks when ye get there. It's not the
    "brogue", it's a state of mind. Sorry.......But I'm all in favour
    of doing more research into the possibilities.

    I just knew when I saw 17 replies that they couldn't possibly all
    be related to the initial note. Oh well guys sorry for jumping into
    the middle of your engrossing converstaion, but here's a few pieces
    of useless info pertaining to Guinness oversees.
    
    I believe Guinness is specially brewed for the States. Not only
    is it pastuerised but it also has a lower alcohol content.
    
    On top of that add the wrong temperature, lack of pouring knowlege,
    pipes not cleaned often enough, and the Guinness not filled often
    enough (allowing it to go stale in the pipes) are all attributing
    factors to a pretty yucky product in your run of the mill psuedo
    Irish bar in the states.
    
    The Emerald Isle here in Chicago, run by a real live paddy serves
    a decent pint. It's not the same as Falhive's Ballyheigue but I'm
    not complaining,

The last time I returned from Ireland, I didn't drink Guinness in the States
for 8 months because I didn't want to spoil the memory of those wonderful
pints in Ireland.  I finally broke down in the Dubliner in D.C. where they
pour a pretty good "slow pint".  In fact, the "Guinness Draft in a bottle"
that you can get in Ireland (with the plastic "plunger" to give it head
(KeViN's gonna have wet dreams over that one ;-)) is better than what you
can get on draft in Boston. (Ok, so I haven't been to Limerick's yet, maybe
it is good there).  But it's true, even the Guinness in a bottle
doesn't travel well: my sister and brother-in-law smuggled some on their
last trip, and it just didn't live up to expectations.

       When I finally DO get over there and have a pint of the REAL
    stuff, and it meets the expectations that y'all have built up, it's
    certain to drive up production quotas in the Guinness brewery.

    Best I had in 6 visits to the US was at the Roisin Ddhu ('scuse
    spelling) In Boston, which tasted very similar to, but not as good
    as, the stuff we get in Wales and England.  The worse was the bottled
    which was equally bad everywhere - it must either be brewed under
    licence, or is Bud with a dollop of boot-black in it.
    
    The Irish must keep all the good stuff for themselves at home.
    
    Canny lads.

       The Roisin Dubh used to be a great hangout of mine years ago,
    before they turned it into a fern-bar to appeal to the yuppies
    from Quincy Market. Don't know what got into Mother Sweeney except,
    of course, greed.

    I must have gone in the wrong bar.  The Black Rose that I visited
    was adorned with republican memorabilia and bedecked with the Celtic
    flags.  It was good to see the "Ddraig Goch" hanging there so far
    from home.  It was the closest thing to a "Pub" that I saw in Mass. 
    
    For a REAL "Irish" fern bar, you should see Biddy Mulligan's on the
    Finchley Road in London - Yeuch.

       Everything is relative. When were you there last? They "renovated"
    about two years ago and while the poem and pictures of the seven
    still adorn the walls, the clientele have changed dramatically.
    Used to have fiddlers and pipers playing at the bar to silent
    listeners. They've all disappeared and the place seems to be full
    of teeny-boppers in drag. 
       I don't know. Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm just getting old.

    I think the quality of the Guinness in Dublin has something to do
    with the Liffey water quality...   :-)

    Holland. Talk about the fox in charge of the chicken coop. I will
