482.0. "THE CHIEFTAINS IN CONCERT" by WILLEE::OROURKE () Thu Dec 22 1988 15:21

O.K. so I have been neglecting my 'noting.' Alright, so I didn't
make it to the CELT party in Acton. I had a final exam that night!

No I haven't gotten lost in Rhode Island, and no I'm not helplessly
sitting at a red traffic light someplace. I've just been BUSY!

Anyway, after you all recover from the Holidays, here's something
    to look forward to:

From the January issue of Yankee magazine:

"World-class Irish Music. There's an irresistibly sweeping wildness
to the sort of Irish music that the Chieftains will bring to their
January 23-24 performances at the Colonial Theatre in Keene, New
Hampshire, a town tucked close to Vermont's southeast corner. The
concert's proceeds will benefit 'Vermont and Irish Kids,' a nonprofit
outfit that brings children from Belfast, Ireland to the Keene (and
Brattleboro, Vermont) area each summer for a six-week stay with
volunteer host families. To reach the world-celebrated Chieftains
at the Colonial (95 Main Street), use Rte 101. Concert begins at
8:00 p.m. Tickets ($18 and $22.50) may be ordered daily from 4 to
9 by calling the box office. 603-357-1233."

    Just a few comments:

January 23rd and 24th Monday and Tuesday --- cruel for working
       folks.

Playing in New Hampshire, but not Mass. ---- could Representative
Culbert have had something to do with this?

'Take Rte 101 to the Colonial' ---- seem like rather simplistic
directions to me....anybody know how many red lights on Rte 101?

    			ANY TAKERS?

    /Jen

I swear "I had nothing to do with the location". It seems that
there is a very large Irish population in and about the area. And
there enough of us willing to drive there instead of Boston or
    Somerville. 8*)

I'll be there if all goes right.

Are you going to make it Jen?

       Are the Studies done now?

This American humour is very reminiscent of the Dutch humour.........
(very strange). Did these buses have any particular/relevant colours
    perhaps?

Methinks more than just Paddy should have been on that small bus.

    weathers.....without a word of complaint,

                           Paddy Culbert.

A singer of songs and ballads, defender of orphans, soldier of fortune,
casual lover, world traveller, all-round good guy, parachutist
extraordinaire, part-time scholar, sportsman specializing in the
tasting of sundry alcoholic beverages, the difficult done immediately -
the impossible takes a little longer, miracles by appointment, wars
fought, revolutions srarted, governments run, bars emptied, tigers
tamed, orgies organised, chastity belts unlocked.

P.S. Description stolen from a modest Kerryman, but just as/more apt
in describing our good f(r)iend & representitive from N.H. Perhaps
there be Kerry blood in the veins......somewhere?????

Just to let you all know that Matt Molloy, flute player with
the Chieftains, has just purchased a pub in my hometown of
    Westport,Co Mayo. Matt,whom I believe hails from Ballaghdereen(sp)
in Co Roscommon, plans to open the pub in a couple of months or
so. Rumour has it that the band will be there but I know for sure
that the whole bloody town(myself included) will be there!!! :-)

    RE: .1-.14

I find this very amusing. I put in a rather innocent note about
a concert, go off on holiday, and come back to find the conversation
has degenerated into a discussion of buses!

I was indeed thinking about going to the concert, but it would be
a long ride home with lots of red lights. Does anybody know of
any nice hotels in the area?

    RE. .1

Yes I've finished school for the semester. COBOL was interesting----no
one person should be allowed to have so much fun! Unfortunately,
classes start again in about two weeks---no rest for the weary!
482.16Buses 3 Chieftains 0FSLPRD::KSULLIVANFri Jan 06 1989 07:396
Buses, no matter what size, colour or usage, are more intresting
as a conversational topic than these Chieftain types!!!!!

Yours who had hoped they'd have stayed in China for a little longer,

Does anyone know what a "floor slide" is?

Ry Cooder plays one on the new Chieftains "The Long Black Veil"
album and I'd like to understand something about the instrument.

PLEASE respond by mail if possible. I'm not a regular reader

A floor side sounds like a floor frame mounted slide guitar:

         ____
  | |____| <--- guitar
  | | |
  +--- | | <--- frame
  | | | |

    ^ Chair

The player sits at the guitar and plays it in the sams way as a lap steel guitar.
Sometimes they can have pedals to udjust the actiobn to produce different tones
etc.

Take a look at the Blues notes conference: AKOFIN::AFTER_HOURS
