468.0. "22nd November 1963, J.F.K. assisinated" by FNYFS::AUNGIER (Test drive a 8700 in the Test Centre) Wed Nov 23 1988 09:26

November 22nd 1963, John F. Kennedy was assisinated in Dallas, Texas.
Where were you on this day and what did you feel then and now. I
put it in this conference as his had Irish roots and strong ones.

University of Notre Dame, mechanical engineering lab. Lost a leader,
ex-Navy (dear to my heart), and one of the few Democrats I have
any warm political feelings for. Still think he was something.
Too bad Teddy is such a sorry substitute.

Immaculate Conception School in the third grade. I remember Mother Superior
on the P.A. system asking us to pray for a special intention. Then a half an
hour later making the announcement that the President was dead. At the age
of 8 I guess it didn't mean much. I remember watching it all on T.V. and I
remember my mother crying for four days. I've read a lot about J.F.K. and
watched some of the specials on the tube about the anniversary. The one
question that keeps popping into my mind is WHAT IF...?

At school, fourth grade, near Bellville, Illinois, USA. The USAF
Military Airlift Command is headquartered there.

Full alert sirens blaring and everyone pulled in from lunch recess
when the news hit that the President had been shot. We were not
released from school until the new President was safely landed back
at Andrews. I was a long wait.

The teacher read aloud to us -- 'The Five Little Peppers' and 'Anne
of Green Gables.' I remember that my teacher was very frightened.
[It didn't occur to me until later that she thought a war might
    be starting...]

I felt sad. I still do. It was such a _waste_.

At GTE Sylvania Computer Lab. in Needham, MA. doing system test
on portion of the Minuteman Missile Procedures Trainer. A stunned
silence fell on the entire lab as the news unfolded. At home that
evening and for the next few critical days, we watched, as a young
family, the sad and tragic unfolding of the drama. At the funeral,
we marvelled at the presence of Eamonn De Valera, President of
Ireland and the impeccably disciplined detachment of the Irish Army
Corps of Cadets who formed the honor guard and fired a last salute
to our late President. We shall not see his like again.

468.5I WAS in Omaha!!AUSTIN::OREILLYStout in Austin?Wed Nov 30 1988 17:5518
According to our family tree done by my dad and his brother - we
are related to the Kennedys. My father told me I was a fifth cousin.

I was only 5. Yet, it was still very sad as I just felt the "vibes"
from my entire family. It is incredible to ponder "what if". He
was such a great man - a true leader. And, for all we know, Bobby
could have been just as strong a force.

I lived in Dallas for six years. I was embarrassed to tell people
in Ireland that I was from Dallas when we visited last December.

P.S. Omaha's actually not a bad place - in fact nice. Good midwestern
city. So is Cleveland. Can't understand why they're the brunt
    of jokes.
