462.0. "Paddy does it!!!!" by WILVAX::CULBERT () Wed Nov 09 1988 05:53

CONGRATULATIONS TO STATE REPRESENTATIVE (ELECT) PADDY L. CULBERT

That's right folks Paddy has won one of the seats for state
representative in the Granite state of New Hampshire.

News sources say that it was a close race with Paddy down by one
vote with only minutes left before the polls close, Paddy realizes
that he and his lovely spouse did not vote and rushed off to cast
their votes thus winning the election by one vote.

Again, Paddy, congratulations. Our family is very proud of you.

Just a thought will the state put blocks under your chair for the
meetings so they will know that you are there??? :^) :^)

    The lesson is:

If you are running for Public Office in New Hampshire, no matter
what your beliefs, run as a Republican (aahem), you are guaranteed
    a seat.

This is how all these little Hitlers get into public life, pay $10,
say "I'm a Republican" (they take it to mean in the American sense),
and suddenly you're a somebody. (Thats not to say that Paddy wasn't
a little Hit....oh....a somebody, before the election). And in ten
years they're on the television with "1001 points of light", "A kinder,
gentler America" and "NO NEW TAXES"

But watch out, in the near future, for LIVE ORGAN BANKS, public
floggings and an increase in the alcohol level for driving limit.

    Re: DERRY.
I think it was last year that the city council of that place voted
to change the name to "DERRY" instead of "LONDONDERRY".
It can be very confusing to foreigners; all the road signs down
south point to Derry while those up north point to Londonderry.
The Irish place-name means grove of oaks but in the late 17th
cent. it was granted by the English to the London Company (somewhat
similar to the Hudson Bay Company) and they changed the name to
    Londonderry........It has a Catholic/Nationalist majority and was
where the present "troubles" started in 1968, the 20th anniversity
of which was recently a feature of T.V news features down here.

462.22keVin is NOT a Clareman.(A sad story).FSLPRD::KSULLIVANTue Dec 06 1988 13:5347
It was brought to my attention last night by a reliable, if surprising,
source, in Fleming's Bar in Waltham, that keVin burnS, our modest and
admired (by some) Clare Champion, friend to all things Irish, is not only
not a Clareman, but that he isn't even Irish.

The truth is that he, as his name implies, is really a Scotsman.

The sad and sordid facts relate to a forefather having to leave his native
Highlands, amidst a furore of ill-feelings and rampant rumours concerning
an abberation of the trust in the sacred position he held within the
community.....the local postman......Yes people, it seems he was caught, red
handed, opening the mail.

He (and family) not only left their native soil, but did so with great haste,
as the rumours became more exagurated and viscious. Suddenly, there were
stories of letters put back into wrong envelopes, money missing and the
Parish Priest having recieved Mrs. Watson's prophylactics (but that could
have just been his sense of humour).

To cut a long and painful story short, the post office grapevine guranteed
he'd never work again in Britain as a postie, and with the Law intrested in
asking, what could prove to be a few very akward questions, their only
alternative was to resort to Hibernia.

After four or five years of migrant work, it was tough at the time with the
accent, they finally settled in Ballyvaughan, (they couldn't go any further
west). But the damage was done, the children soon fled to the U.S. to escape
their shame. This has resulted, to this day, in the dogged, approaching
overkill, "love" for Clare and Ireland. (Anywhere but Scotland)!

So please, when you hear keVin shouting "come on the banner", "give it
sthick", "Clare will be fine in '89" etc. and walking around with a copy
of the Clare Champion under his arm, understand the circumstances and
have a little sympathy.

"The sins of the fathers should not be visited on the sons & daughters"

Kevin will get more sympathy than you think.

Many of us who claim an Irish heritage can also claim similar Scottish
heritage. Many Scots fled Scotland for the Emerald Isle to escape
the same opression that caused the revolution in Ireland. My mother's
father (and six brothers)fled Kilmarnock in Scotland for Ireland,
married a Roscommon girl, and emigrated to the U.S.

    RE: .29

    Cathy,
First off it wasn't my father but my grandfather on my mother's
side. My father was born in Southie (half Irish/half Lithuanian
    - the proudest and most stubborn man I've ever met). The family
names are Coyle and Rice and his father worked for a distillery
(probably Johnny Walker). I've only been able to get to the area
twice and only once did I have any time to go looking around. It
was alot easier to find family gravestones in Ireland (my grandmother
talked more about Ireland to my mother thus there's more history
of her side). I'll have to back to mother now and get some of the
story retold as I've forgotten alot of the first names and
    relationships.

    			Thanks for the interest,

    					Mike
