452.0. "IN TUA NUA?" by TRCA01::CURZON (Richard Curzon TRS 5/2) Thu Oct 20 1988 15:02

Music from "over the pond" is going through a bad phase here in
Toronto. There was a bunch called the Friends of Fiddlers Green led by
Tam Kearney that used to bring us the best of whatever was passing
through. However, they don't seem to put on much public entertainment
now, nobody wants to do the work anymore.

So it was good news to see a Usenet note stating a group called
IN TUA NUA would be here, supposed to specialize in Uillean piping.
Any of you gentlemen/ladies/other know about this group?

[then I have to find out where they will be...]

I have heard one song by In Tua Nua on WBRU in Providence (a rock station)...
It featured the phrase "Come on down into my kitchen..." which apparently
caused some stir in Dublin since it is a euphamism similar to the Beatles
"I want to hold your hand"... I don't know about the pipes, but the particular
song I heard ("All I Wanted Was to Believe in Somebody") was rock-n-roll.

Leaprechauns have all kind of music.

In Tua Nua (In a new land), is a rock group. They have a smattering
of celtic influence in their rock music. A marriage of the music
forms. They are very popular here.

In Tua Nua concert dates to be found in note 450.1.

If it's traditional music alone that you're looking for, then forget
about this band/tour. As the last note stated, In Tua Nua are a
rock-n-roll band, who incorporate traditional instruments, pipes
and fiddle (or is it violin), to enhance their sound. They have
an exelent new album - just released (over here anyway), and
are well worth seeing.....if you like R&R.

If you're intrested in the pipes in particular buy Davy Spillane's
    "Atlantic Bridge", released last year.......exelent.

                Murphy.
452.4I'll look for Spillane...TRCA01::CURZONRichard Curzon TRS 5/2Fri Oct 21 1988 11:5113
I am a fan of the Irish pipes - my wife is happy they are so
expensive, I would have bought a set by now if not for that... I liked
Liam O'Flynn who played with Planxty; but the true master, the one who
could order breakfast on the pipes, has got to be Mr Paddy Moloney (by my
ears). Finbar Furey can be very good, but he doesn't to seem to have all
the subtlety of the Great Moloney.

So I will definitely look for that Davy Spillane, and I will
pass on the IN TUA NUA, too bad.

By the way, the phrase "come on in my kitchen" appears in
American folk music too; must have been common speech phrase in the old
days I guess.

For a fan, Richard, I'm surprised you don't lament the passing of
the great Seamus Ennis. I like Paddy as much as the next person,
but Seamus was without doubt the better man.

Give Paddy another 15-20 years and he'll probably get there !!

    Bernard.

Well Bernard, some may feel I am, shall we say, a little
undiscerning.... Maybe it is the fact of hearing much more of Maloney,
or much better recordings, or seeing him several times in person; but I
still prefer his stuff. Matter of taste, I also wouldn't pick Jascha
Heifetz on the violin unlike most people who "know more than I do" in
that field.

To my ears, more has been gained than has been lost by the
younger players in both instruments. (all respect due to those who laid
the foundation and set the high standards)

Here's another vote for Seamus Ennis...the only man that could drink
*bloody Marys' from a flask and play the 'fox hunt' at the same
    time...God rest his soul.
452.8Paddy gets my vote......FSLPRD::KSULLIVANMon Oct 24 1988 10:0017
In my opinion, Paddy Keenan is one of the all time greats when it
comes to pipers. He seems to have backed away from the spotlight since
the demise of the Bothies, and is to be found in West Cork & the occasional
    Fleadh.

Just listen to the Bothy Band albums, his solo efforts and the superb
    Paddy Keenan/Paddy Glackin "Doublin".

Anyone who had the privilege to see the Bothy Band live, must remember
Paddy (the powerhouse), head down and pipes blazin'. Easily the
best and most talented Traditional band to ever grace a stage.

Their likes will ne'er be seen again.

                              Murphy.

452.9Breathtaking....FSLPRD::KSULLIVANMon Nov 21 1988 09:0516
In Tua Nua gave a superb, no exaggeration, show last night to a
SOLD OUT Paradise club, in Boston. No one could have expected this
performance, the power, the energy, that voice.........90 minutes
of pure joy......well worth braving the elements. If anyone gets a
    chance......see them.

WBCN broadcasted the show live.....did anyone out there happen to
    tape it????

keVin/Paddy, we have 9 seats in Row K (11) approx, her computer
was down, for Dolores on Saturday night.
