450.0. "Notre Dame beats Miami,31-30!!!!!" by AUSTIN::OREILLY (Stout in Austin?) Sat Oct 15 1988 19:29

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame did it today - they beat the #1
college football team in the US, Miami, 31-30!!!!!!!!

Miami was honorable in that they attempted the 2 point conversion
instead of going for the tie.

    What a game!!

It was close all the way. The crowd was awesome.

    Go domers all the way!!

I've returned, after two days of "Appreciating Differences". Lets get
    back to aggravating someone.

    Re: In Tua Nua.

I got their album "The Long Acre" last w/end. I thought it was exelent.
It takes a few listens, but then it hits. A fine effort indeed.

It is not a traditional album as such. Pipes & fiddle, but more in
the Moving Hearts vein. No instrumentals. If you liked the single
the radio stations have been playing, then you should like the
    rest of the record.

    The Challenge:

In other words, keVin & Paddy.......FORGET IT!!! Compared to the
Van/Chieftains album, this is Pure Punk. Even though we had a swing
on the cat's tail vote, this is a no hoper?!?!?!?

Yes, some of us, whoever us may be, will be going to see them in
the Paradise (I think), in Boston.

The season is starting to pick up,

                           Murphy.

The way things are going John, you may have some fun in the Cotton
Bowl, unless ND represents the Big 10 in the Rose against UCLA....

Notre Dame is considered an Independent so they can't represent the Big 10 in
the Rose Bowl. Hope for a re-match with Miami for #1 at the end of the year and
that should remove any doubts about blown calls, home field advantage, etc.

Here's how I would like to see it....

    UCLA loses to USC.

Notre Dame wins all their games as well as Nebraska - who beats
    Oklahoma.

ND vs. Nebraska in Orange Bowl. Incredible game lead exchanges
hands ten times - finally ends in a tie - several heroes from each
team. First time two teams rated #1 in history!!

Unfortunately, UCLA will beat USC and #1 won't be able to play #2!!
NU and Notre Dame could still end up playing - but no matter who
    wins - #1 won't be resolved.

    re. in tua nua...

The only good thing about that band is the female lead vocalist
Lesley Dowdall, the blonde blue eyey bombshell. I saw them a couple
of years ago in concert and the only thing I remember is the bass
player(name forgettable) hitting one of my mates for going to the
toilet during a solo!!! (rest censored).....

Tell ya what forget in tua nua,U2 etc...and buy yourself a copy
of the Waterboys new LP called 'Fishermans Blues'...it's an epic
(side 2 recorded in Spiddal,Co Galway) it also includes a cover
version of Van Morrison's 'Sweet Thing'(from his Astral Weeks
album) that in itself justifies the whole album and the 3 year
    wait for a new release.

Can someone explain the Irish connection with Notre Dame??? and
does the name Quasimodo ring a bell...!!!

    - Dave Keating.

450.8Bombshells have problems also....FSLPRD::KSULLIVANMon Oct 24 1988 10:2014
That was a very sexist remark, Dermot. Anyway, they've now got two
bombshells (fiddle, or is it violin, player), so they are now twice
as good!?!?!? A few years ago the were only so-so, but the new
    album is good.
I saw the Waterboys play 4/5 songs in the park beside Leisureland
during the Arts Festival, 3 summers ago. I will take your advice
and add it to my shopping list.

                        I often listen,

                            Murphy.

Maybe it should have stated "Ballyporeen" :-)
