438.0. "Boston Irish News" by TALLIS::DARCY (Abolish Section 31) Fri Sep 16 1988 15:55

Anybody know any background of The Boston Irish News newspaper?
    i.e. owners, writers, circulation, etc...

They have quite an interesting view on Ireland.

    George,

The Boston Irish News, affectionately known as the BIN in
recognition of its proper receptacle, is owned, written, published,
distributed etc. by Don Mooney, an ex-cop from Dorchester.

Its been around for about ten years. Most people in the Irish
scene consider it a joke. It is characterized by regularly spewing
forth the Dublin Government and Establishment view of the world.

For some reason it seems to get a lion's share of ads although
I know of no one who buys it and reads it regularly. Scads of copies
are frequently given away free in supermarkets and subway stations
    around Boston.

It is not nearly as well read as The Irish Echo, The Irish
Voice, or The Irish People, which are all available in Boston.
About six months ago, Bill O'Donnell of the The Irish Echo, a man
who usually finds only good in all men, did a scathing editorial
on the BIN. Kevin Murphy regulary castigates the BIN in his column
for the Irish People. Hope this helps.

OK, thanks for the affirmation. I orginally thought it may have
been a British publication. Some weeks it barely has enough pages
    to make a newspaper from.

I'm amazed too at the advertising. Have these companies read the
    paper before buying space?
